Of course, DQVIII is considered by many to be one of the best games ever.

Dude, you don't usually like RPG's, and DQVIII is a very traditional JRPG, turn-based combat, level grinding, and all. I can't imagine you liking it really.

I heard the story and graphics are awesome. It's the random battles that piss me off......because I skip them, and because of that my characters suck, resulting in a difficult and terrible game. If I actually put up with random battles, I could probably see myself getting into a few of those hardcore RPGs.

hines then stay FAR away from this game >_> we don't want another "ohh i shouldn't have bought this... give me my 20$ back it was worth $3"

this game is hard even with all the grinding and random battles... it has a lot of random battles and is loved in japan because it's extrememly traditional.

You won't like DQ8, I can almost promise you that. I say that because even I thought DQ8 moved pretty slow and I am extremely patient with these type of games. It wasn't so much that the combat that was slow, just everything in between! Obviously I still think it's an excellent game and would give it an 8/10, but I just do not think you would like it based off that statement.

oh...theres alot of waiting?

im good then....

Well, it's not so much waiting, it just seemed like everything moved slower then it should. Whether it was managing the inventory, trying to make a new item out of ingredients, etc, it all just seemed to move painstakingly slow. I don't know, maybe I was in a bad state of mind while playing so everything was exaggerated. But, that was really my only complaint about the game, which is not too bad. In fact, all this talk makes me want to start a new game on it, lol.

I have only played a little bit of FF12, so I can't say if I like its combat or not. But, I will always love turn based combat. I do like real time combat, too, but I really love mental challenges and turn based almost reminds me of playing chess or something. To me the best combat is in games like Chrono Cross where it is essentially turn based, but there is also an element of strategy involved, not just mindlessly hitting the x button over and over :)

The Super Famicom remakes of DQ 1 & 2 are much easier than the originals, too, with less grinding. You get double XP and gold for each kill so you can breeze right through them. More for nostalgia than anything else, or for newer gamers to experience the old games without struggling.

There's no excuse for excessive grinding in modern RPGs because they are no longer limited by ROM cart size.

Hi People!

If you could invent your very own "Game Feature" for an "RPG",that nobody else has thought of already, what would it be?

I believe most of us love RPG video game genre. It's addictive and has replayability. But I wanted to know, if any of you sometimes get this feeling that you're not playing this game, but working in it? That you're all the time waiting for the "better" part and for now you're just holding out.
When I saw this webcomic about the gameplay pace in videogame RPGs, I had a feeling that it directly expresses some of my frustrations with the genre. That it's either grinding or not very inspiring cut-scenes. And every time you want the other thing (plot or grind), but no the one you're having.

I know that not every game is like that, but there's sometimes this tendency of boredom. Have you had such experience with RPG games or is it just my problem? I'd be happy to hear some opinions.

RPG's are my favorite game genre. Sure it takes quite a few tries sometimes to find a new RPG that fits your gaming style (I'm personally very picky about the battle system in an RPG), but to me it's the genre that you get the most bang for your buck.

When I first started gaming, I never tried any RPGs because they looked so boring to me. Then at one point I tried one and have been hooked ever since. Now I am going back and trying to get a hold of all the ones that I missed during the 16-bit years.

Same here! For the most part, traditional Japanese RPG's are my favorite, but I've grown very fond of Western RPG's over the past few years such as Morrowind, Oblivion, KOTOR, etc., Definitely my favorite genre, for sure. I guess what I love about them is, like Aleeock said, you get so much game for your money {typically 100 hours at the least}, and, I also really enjoy the mental strategy that goes into playing them. Sure, there are times when RPG's can be "slow" or a bit too story heavy, but I rarely ever find them boring :)

Yeah for me it is more of a science of picking the right ones. Unfortunately for me, the RPGs that are Final Fantasy arent my cup of tea because it feels like the all are just a chore. I can go through Tactics just fine but thats probably because there is an important aspect of that game that I like, the fact of level grinding. Basically more often than not if the game can have level grinding in it then I will like it. I also need skills to be readily acquired, FF games usually require the equipping of special weapons and for skills to be bought in order to use them, I prefer the level up and gain the skill type.

A few other boring RPGs have been ones that had uninspired music, dry dialogue, or a compltely ridiculous plot.

Battle System is a LARGE portion of the game as well as Presentation. And 2D sprites always have a place in my heart (Disgaea, Star Ocean 1+2)

It is a matter of personal taste and the games you pick. Some people don't like random, repetitive battles that are in so many RPGs. There are a lot of RPGs that make no real attempt to change the formula whatsoever, and a lot of people like those games.

Personally, I think western RPGs are getting better (see Diablo, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect, etc) while eastern RPGs (Final Fantasy and the like) are becoming more stagnant.
