Re: Western RPG's: Why still a niche genre?

Eh......I really dont know who likes western rpgs alot.......would wild arms be in this genre...? (i DOUBT it..quick thought)
Wild Arms is a definite JRPG. Western RPG's (CRPG's (computer RPG's) before the Xbox came along...), are like Ultima (which I've never played, but apparently was very good, but hasn't had a new game in 10 years), anything from Black Isle Studios (before they were killed off. Oh cruel fate :'(), or Bioware. So basically, Western RPG's are games like kotor, Baldur's Gate, Fallout, Oblivion, Morrowind etc...

As for who plays them, its mostly PC gamers 'n stuff. It really is a small base, probably around a million who consistently buy Western RPG's, hence me calling it a niche genre.

I'm curious as to what's the main selling point in an RPG for you? If you don't like RPG's, then that's fine. But if you do, is it the art style, combat system, graphics, developer...what is it? :)

Mostly developer, to be honest. And second to that would probably be gameplay/combat followed lastly by graphics. Most RPG's I own are from Square/Enix, Level 5, Namco, and Atlus.

well what really draws me to an rpg is that it isnt turn based

i hate final fantasy

but some like live action turned based games that dont require waiting are kool

like...mabinogi is sorta one

Yeah, I'm a much bigger fan of action/rpg's than straight up RPG's, so the combat system is definitely an important factor for me.

More so than anything though, I think the game has to initiate you into it's world in a fun and interesting way. I hate it when RPG's expect me to have read a manual on how to navigate their menu systems or it gives me no direction on what attributes I should level up. If they can't figure out a semi-entertaining way of teaching me how to play their game, then there's a good chance I'll just get fed up with it and quit.

yeah i know what you mean
like your playing and dont know what to do at all so you play lil longer to see if it clicks

but your too far in and have the wrong stats and everything for your character type

so you just give up

thats why i like kingdom hearts

it does all the hard work for you all you gotta do is set the abilitiies you need and want

It is mostly the playing of a game that has a good story element that unfolds as you play. Having the battle system action orientated is a plus sometimes, but then again it all depends on the story itself for me. In some of the old retro RPGs I really like the turn based battle system. Sometimes I do look for games that come from certain developers but I am willing to try anything that is RPG. And I do not like the tactical or strategy RPGs.

Whether or not I even try it out is usually based on who it's by and what I've heard about it from previews, although anything in the Tales series is a no brainer.

If I can play a demo, whether I end up buying it is based on how much fun the combat is, how it controls, and to some extent, the graphics, since you can't get the story from a demo.

Although you would think story is a big factor, tbh I can play rpgs with mediocre stories if the combat is fun enough (Eternal Sonata comes to mind).

I prefer real-time battle systems, but I have enjoyed my fair share of turn-based rpgs.

First for me is the Combat system, if I don't like the way that operates, might as well just put it down right then.

^ Then that.  (:lol sorry I'm lazy)

Because I love old school 2D RPGs, graphics are pretty low for me on the list.  As long as you can tell the tree from the rock, I'm good. It kinda irritates me when someone asks about a game and says "How good are the graphics?" >.>  It's just like asking me what my second cousin wore at the party 4 weeks ago, I frankly don't care and never will. :lol

I rent them or look them up on the internet to see how they are. It really doesn't matter to me what the combat system is since I will play any type of combat system. The story also has to be at least decent for me to keep on playing it. Oh, and characters have to be decent too.

I'd give anything for a nice mint copy of Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals. Now that was an utter masterpiece. I wish that series would have recieved some attention in this day and age.

Combat system is definitely something I focus on as well. Strat-RPG's I personally cannot stand. Shining Force and Fire Emblem comes to mind. I tried so hard to get into Ogre Battle, but I never get close to finishing or fail to make the proper decision of chosing wisely. Which leads to the fall of my army in these types of games.

Action/RPG's I always will love too. Since my all time favorite RPG, was the SNES Secret of Mana =)

For me, it's dialogue choices. I know that sounds kind of stupid, but RPG's, for me, are about really getting into the game, and almost becoming the main character. That just can't be done if I can't decide what I'm actually saying, and doing.

Then, it's probably story, then combat.

KOTOR was the first RPG I have played that had this feature, but I really hope it becomes the norm because it really adds to the whole experience. BTW, everything about KOTOR is just superior {imo}, so every single RPG out there needs to take a page from that game :D

for me the most important part of RPGs are character development features (example materia in FFVII, Expheres, titles and skills in symphonia, job system in final fantasy) if the game doesn't have them (like just lvl up and select atributes or automatic selection) this is what i think it makes the "role playing" in RPG .then the combat system is the important part for me.. however story is equal but the thing is that storyes don't usually start really good or don't have a hook so stories for me are just an extra factor that makes me enjoy the game rather than buying it for the story (reason = i love plot twists and they don't tell you that in the game box but usually in reviews). but i rarely are dissapointed by RPG's stories anyway.
(weird enough legend of dragoon one of my favorite RPG's doesn't have lot if any customisation)

That was my favorite game of all time for awhile, until I played Secret of Mana 2 for the Snes. I never knew you had such fine taste in videogames. :lol

Oh yes sir, when I finally saw Seiken Densetsu 3 (SOM2). I nearly wanted to cuss Nintendo of America out. That was complete hogwash, that they ignored this amazing sequel.
