RPG Discussion Thread

for me the most important part of RPGs are character development features (example materia in FFVII, Expheres, titles and skills in symphonia, job system in final fantasy)

Yeah, I forgot about stuff like that. Playing around with materia in FFVII even, I was able to build Yuffie up to be really awesome. Tales of the Abyss had a really cool system going with these things that you equipped...I can't even remember what they are called, but they made a difference.

I like deep stories. To me it's almost like an interactive movie. If the story sucks then it's not even worth playing. Even if the graphics are amazing and the battle system is top tier.

yeah i tend to gravitate towards developers. i usually know i will like the new square enix or bethesda RPG. i may take a chance on someone else, but not usually. games are too expensive to take too many chances.

yeah most of the time that's how i measure how good a story will be, for example square-enix , namco and sometimes atlus have very good storylines

HI All

What draws me me to an RPG is the variation of "Side Quests","Random Events",things like that.Ultimately,I really enjoy sculpting my characters by buying clothes for them, buying weapons, level grinding, healing them,it's kind of like playing the role of a parent and ultimately God.

God bless

It needs to have a long gameplay value and story that can be played on multiplayer

Multiplayer is the last thing I require of an rpg, to be honest. Most of my favorite rpgs are single player only.

I feel the same way.You don't need one of your friends present while you're "Level Grinding" or trying to solve puzzles, not to be mean, but it's hard to focus on a deep puzzle and searching while trying not to be rude to your friend by not paying them any attention.

Playing Dragon Quest V for SNES right now and it's surprisingly well balanced for an older RPG. About half way through and zero grinding so far.

Wow, that's awesome! I never got to play that one, but I absolutely love the NES ones and DQ7 for psx. I'm surprised DQ7 did so poorly here since it was one of the best selling games in Japan, ever. Oh, and I did like DQ8, just not as much as the others.

The words "The Elder Scrolls" on the front of the box. :)

I hear you on that one! Though, I've only played Morrowind and Oblivion..I don't know if there's any others or what not, but those two games were good. I couldn't get into Morrowind, but mainly cause I tried it after Oblivion, so yeah. :lol

You should try Morrowind again some time if you get that PC. Oblivion has more flash and the combat is much better, but Morrowind has much, much more freedom and is quite a bit deeper. Oh, and yes, there is other Elder Scrolls games. There is, TES1:Arena, TES2:Daggerfall {believed by fans to be the best game of the series} and then Morrowind and Oblivion. There is also a few Elder Scrolls games for mobile phones. You can actually download the full version of TES1:Arena from the elder scrolls website for free. It's a great game so I recommend it. Lastly, the elder scrolls has a great community and forum which I frequent quite a bit.

I just couldn't get into Morrowind after spending my first half an hour trying to kill a frog I came across. It was extremely hard to hit anything in the beginning.

Yeah, you just didn't have your skills set up right. It pretty much happens to everybody their first time, hehe. I remember when I first played I took marksman but set it to a minor skill so it was really weak. I had no idea why my arrows were flying right through people, lol. Now I can hit anything usually on the first shot. So yeah, once you figure that out combat is a breeze. Morrowind was actually more about exploration and role playing then combat, though, which I guess is good or bad depending on how you like to play RPG's. And don't get me wrong, I am not saying it's better, or worse then Oblivion, just really different :)
