PS3...thoughts so far

I'll just stick with my HD now and my Blu-Ray and HD-DVD's! The picture is a HUGE difference and it is not that much for the movies if you use half.com or eBay. And the PS3 is not that much either when you get Blu-Ray and get to play games! Also, you cannot find a TV without HD anymore. So, it will be here quicker than you think!
Now, tell me. Most people have TVs already, so why do they have to get new ones now?

You do not have to. I did. Just like a car and everything else. You think everything lasts forever! You can say anything you want, but $600.00 is not a lot for what you get! And I like my HDTV, PS3, and 360! It is funny, because everyone I know has bought new TV's in the past 3 years. Only person I know that has older TV's is my Grandma. :lol

I never said everything last forever. I said most people won't go into HD until they have to.

So eventually, everyone will go HD and everyone will go either Blu-Ray or HD-DVD (whichever one wins the disc format war)

I think there will not be a winner and both formats will remain.

HD wins out of, it's still great looking, and it's the cheaper one. That right there wins it since most people don't want to spend another $1000.

Actually Blu-Ray sales are, I think, tripling HD-DVD sales right now so its actually looking like Blu-Ray might end up winning.

Uhhh, research it. Homicidal Cherry is right. Blu-Ray sales are 3 times more than HD-DVD Sales and they expect HD-DVD to fold in early 2008. I am hoping they both stay, since I have both. But, it looks like Blu-Ray is going to win this round.

Also, HD-DVD Movies cost the same as Blu-Ray. The Players are cheaper, but not as nice as the Blu-Ray Stand Alone Players and its options. And who said it is $1,000.00 when you can just buy a PS3 for $599.99?!? :? Most Blu-Ray people are the ones buying the PS3's right now.

Exactly why I made my point that the PS3 sales should, in all likelihood spring up. But what's going to happen to the 360 since it supports HD-DVD?

Recent research data for the year so far pins Sony's Blu-ray as the eventual winner of the HD format wars, as 70% of hi-def discs sold in the first quarter of 2007 were Blu-ray discs.

Casino Royale, the top seller for the first quarter, did much to advance Blu-ray's popularity
The scales have tipped in the hi-def format war, and the advantage is now all Blu-ray's. According to recent sales data provided by Home Media Magazine and Nielsen VideoScan, Blu-ray is beating HD-DVD by a substantial margin of 70%-30% within the first quarter of 2007.

The figures cite that 1.2 million high-definition discs were purchased from January 1st to March 31st, but of those purchases, 832,530 units were Blu-ray while 359,300 were of HD-DVD format. In terms of total units sold since the initiation of both formats, Blu-ray has sold 1.2 million units while HD-DVD has sold 937,500.

Although HD-DVD held an edge over its rival as late as Q4 2006, the balance of power showed a major shift earlier this year. As GamePro previously reported back in February, the HD home media market began to show signs of significant change as Blu-ray began outselling HD-DVD at a rate of 2 to 1. Within the following month, Blu-ray began outselling HD-DVD at a rate of nearly 3 to 1, or more specifically, 335,980 Blu-ray discs to 119,570 HD-DVDs.

In instances when a specific video title was offered initially in both formats, research shows that Blu-ray has consistently come out on top. Sales data for the film The Departed states that, when released simultaneously on February 13th, consumers purchased 53,640 copies of the Blu-ray edition while 31,590 were sold to HD-DVD users.

Given that the majority of the major film studios are currently backing Blu-ray -- some exclusively -- some analysts predicted HD-DVD to go by the way of Sony's Betamax as early as 2008, but recent sales figures indicate that the toppling of HD-DVD has come much sooner than expected. So far, Universal is the only major studio that caters exclusively to the HD-DVD format, as it claims that the discs are easier and cheaper to produce.

The 360 does not use HD-DVD for its games though. So, it should be alright. Sony banked a lot on the Blu-Ray and making their games on Blu-Ray. Amagine if Blu-Ray failed! Sony would have been majorly screwed.

Ah, ok. Good show, Neo, good show. :D

If that's true, then PS3 sales should spike soon...especially with the new games coming out.

I would expect them to spike right around HD-DVD folds (if they win the format war that is) because you can't expect the average person to buy a Blu-Ray player, knowing it could end up worthless. A lot of experts are actually predicting that if Blu-Ray wins the format war, the PS3 will end up outselling all other Nex-Gen consoles (by a VERY slight margin) 8)

EDIT: Lol four replies were posted before I could type out one. Boy this is a hot topic.

And, even though this is an forecast:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Contrary to the opinions of gamers believing that Blu-ray has ruined the PlayStation 3, noted Webush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter believes that the cutting edge media format will be the key to Sony's success at the end of the current console war.

According to a new 207-page report from Wedbush Morgan Securities, industry analyst Michael Pachter believes that the Sony PS3 may win the next-gen console war because of Blu-ray, not in spite of it. His analysis, as transcribed by GameDaily Biz, states that video game content on all three consoles will more or less cancel each other out, but the key factor will, in fact, be the movie industry.

"Notwithstanding the efforts of the three console manufacturers to deliver compelling exclusive content, we expect the ultimate outcome of the console wars to be decided by the motion picture studios," Pachter writes. "Should the studios embrace Sony's Blu-ray standard for high definition DVDs, we think Sony will gain an insurmountable advantage over Microsoft; should the studios embrace Sony rival Toshiba's HD-DVD format, we think that Microsoft can maintain its first mover advantage and will dominate software sales for years to come."

Seeing as how the PS3 and Xbox 360 are the only two next-gen consoles with a heavy stake in the movie industry, Pachter believes that Nintendo will be out of the running as a long-term industry leader, although the Wii will no doubt have the largest collection of exclusive games. But between the Xbox 360 and PS3, Pachter predicts that Blu-ray will eventually beat out HD-DVD to win the hi-def format war, which means that the console war may play out like this:

"[W]e expect Microsoft's Xbox 360 to enjoy a first mover advantage for the next two years, capturing approximately 44% of U.S. and European combined next generation hardware unit sales by the end of 2007," he reports. "We forecast the PS3 and Nintendo's Wii to capture approximately 21% and 35%, respectively, of the next generation hardware market in this same period. We forecast the Wii to take the lead in 2008, with 39% market share, and expect the race to even out in 2009, with all three console makers capturing between 30 -- 37% of the overall market.

But in the end, he believes that Sony will come out on top, although he also clearly states that the victory will only be a marginal one.

"Ultimately, we see Sony 'winning' the console war with 36% of the market, with Nintendo 'capturing' second place at 34% and Microsoft finishing third at 30%," he concludes. "We believe that this is essentially a dead heat, and each manufacturer will have sufficient market share to generate significant profits. These estimates do not include market shares in Japan, which we expect to be dominated by Nintendo (51% through 2011) and Sony (44%)."

Despite this all-out battle, Pachter predicts good tidings for the industry as a whole, as he forecasts a compounded growth rate of 16.1% from 2007 to 2009. In fact, U.S. publishers stand to make a total of $17.7 billion within this calendar year alone.

Good info Neo. And if all three have a 30% or so share, that means consumers will win. But I always think it's funny that market research groups always seem to leave out the people who have no problems buying multiple consoles. But whatever. :D

Yeah, once Blu-Ray takes over, I can see PS3 beating 360, but probably not Wii. I mean really, the Wii is something new and something everyone can enjoy. The PS3 is a PS2 with an empty controller.

And Blueray!!! :lol

Blu. Doesn't matter though, it's a PS2 at heart, which was a PS1, I guess. There's nothing new besides fancy graphics.
