Metroid Prime 3 discussion.

Hm. Not big enemies, that I can recall. There's quite a few times that you get attacked by swarms of smaller enemies, though. But they do still throw a lot at you, even if it's not all at once. I've already gotten the "Achievement" for 200+ kills and I'm not that far into it.

Still waiting to get another Wii? :)

It's not "lackluster" by any means, IMO. As far as the love/hate thing, I suppose it's possible to hate it...although I haven't heard a convincing reason yet. ;)

Well I can get a Wii because I have a friend holding one away for me (tried to make that sound as appropriate as I could :lol) but I just need the money. I have a few more bills to pay off with my next one so I may need to wait a little while. :-\

Metroid Prime 3 is, to me, a game that symbolizes an instant classic on the Wii. It's just one of those games that you HAVE to own...almost like a treasure. Kind of like God of War 1 and 2 for the PS2, or Halo 1 and 2 for the Xbox/360.

I'm trying to be objective by thinking about it in terms of someone who maybe has never played a Metroid game before. But it's hard to think that way, since it's not true, and part of the appeal is the classic Metroid gameplay. :lol

The graphics are one thing that I'm sure almost everyone will complain about, but I'm quite impressed. Especially with the visor effects. Like when you do a charge beam you can actually see the reflection of Samus' face in the visor! And most of the time you can see a reflection of her eyes. It's a neat effect. :)

A bit of trivia which I never was sure about, but apparently the correct way to pronounce her name is Sam-us Aaron. That's how all of the NPCs in the game pronounce it.

No, I always pronounced it Sam-us. It was more interesting for her last name, which I usually pronounced different every time because I wasn't sure how it was supposed to be pronounced. A-ran? Auron? So it's good to know that it's pronounced the same as "Aaron." :D

Oh, ok good. I hate when games that have no voice-overs throw some weird name at you and you can't figure out how to say it for the life of you, so you make up your own pronunciation. :D

The added voice-overs in Metroid Prime 3 are a welcome plus. :)

Variety Not Pleased With Metroid Prime 3...but for a Dumb Reason...

metroidprime3issue.jpg

The Variety review of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption just goes to show the ramifications Nintendo's message that the Wii is a casual system can cause a title like Metroid. Just forget the debate if Nintendo abandoned hardcore gamers, or gamers abandoned Nintendo, for just a little bit. Like we went over in Joystiq podcast #14, whoever did what to whom, the two are currently experiencing what professionals might call "marital issues." The thing this review by Variety showed is that a mainstream publication notices something wrong with a non-casual title on a perceived casual system. Variety ends the first paragraph of the review saying, "Ultimately, gamers looking for a well paced, thrill-a-minute shooter with a compelling narrative are going to be disappointed. 'Halo' this ain't."

The Variety review has some kind words for the game, but it seems so clearly written with the realization that the marketing of the Wii console as a casual system doesn't click with this game. Another scathing point they make is Metroid is more "tedious than epic," they say the boss battles are "exhaustive affairs requiring dedication, patience, and most importantly, a familiarity with the vocabulary of videogames: double jumping, circle strafing, shooting weak points for massive damage, etc. Those who previously used the Wii only for party games will need a 13 year-old boy to explain it all." Whether this analysis is right or wrong isn't the point, 10 million people may own a Wii, but how many of those people actually move beyond the casual titles or would purchase a game like Metroid? The Wii was sold on casual fun, Metroid is not -- to an outside consumer -- a Wii title.

It's too hardcore for casual gamers? NINTENDO SHOULD LOVE REVIEWS LIKE THIS! Yeah the Wii is a casual system, which is best served as a side-kick to other major consoles, but let it have its hardcore games. The one main complaint people are having about the Wii is the lack of hardcore games. Now we have one and people are upset...I guess you can't make everyone happy...

I definitely will. I rarely start a game on normal. I like to try it on it's hardest..or at least one level higher then normal the first run through.

Check out the topic I made about Variety's review of MP3...what a joke.

Re: Variety Not Pleased With Metroid Prime 3...but for a Dumb Reason...

Actually it's not a bad article, IMO.

In addition to being borderline nonsensical, "Metroid Prime 3" is also difficult. It has the audacity to say, "Welcome to this strange place. Now go figure it out." Much of the game consists of groping around strange places, puzzling out devices, and traveling back and forth to find new powers, which serve also as "keys" to get to previously unreachable areas.

Prime 3 is something you can get into if you're already a gamer, whether or not you've played Prime 1&2. But I imagine for someone whose only experience on the Wii is Mario Party 8 and the like, Prime 3 might seem really hard.

I don't think Prime 3 was made for them.

Re: Variety Not Pleased With Metroid Prime 3...but for a Dumb Reason...

From what I hear though, the controls are really easy, allowing for casual gamers to pick up and play this game as well. I still don't get how they're upset with Nintendo having a hardcore game for a change on the Wii.

Ok so that Achievement thing, I think it only works with people who also have MP3.

I have it, so here's my friend code.

I have a few of you on my Wii friend list already but I'll add anyone I missed if you have this game so that we can share the Achievements stuff.

Well it does have tutorials on most of the basic stuff, so I guess that could be true.

Beats me. You'd think they'd be happy to have such a hardcore game on the Wii.

Gosh, I guess they never played Metroid before in their lives. Variety? more like "close-minded people who haven't played anything since Frogger and Pac-Man on 2600"

It's been a long time since I played MP1, and honestly I never finished it, so it's hard to say. But from what I can remember, MP3 seems to have more action.

Scanning enemies and solving puzzles and scanning things to solve puzzles are still a pretty big part of it, though. :D

Speaking of scanning, I totally forgot to do it on one of the bosses and I know it's going to haunt me now. No 100% for me. :-\ Oh well, gives me reason to play again when I'm done!
