There are a few downsides to the PS3 you should probably know about.
One thing being that it's really hard to find a backwards compatible PS3 console. So unless you get lucky, or until they make all of them backwards compatible, you won't be able to play any PS2 games you have. Of course, if you still have a PS2, or if you're more interested in playing games from this generation, then you're probably okay.
Another thing is that on PSN now, you can still play games online for free, but apparently you have to be a paid subscriber to PSN to get demos.
