:( Boo!

Re: Goldeneye 007 was going to be on XBLA!? (It was canned apparently)

Microsoft saves an old classic from losing value.

Good call.

This is one of the few games where it would be OK. Adding online multiplayer would be a huge addition to the game and make it infinitely better than the original. So bad call. Especially for MS. It would have made them a huge amount of money.

Where's the fun in that? The best Goldeneye memories are in a cramped room with tangled cords where, after ten minutes blowing into the cartridge, you can finally play it and trash talk and mess with your friend's controllers when they start winning.

Amusingly enough, I could probably port the game to PC with online multiplayer. If I used Microsoft XNA (which I'd probably end up doing for the graphics, sound and input anyway) it would work natively for the PC and 360.

You can also use the Counter Strike mod.

Not necessarily...

With its place in history cemented, recent reports that Rare will be reimagining the Nintendo 64 version of GoldenEye 007 for Xbox Live Arcade aren't without interest. Citing omnipresent "very reliable sources," as well as claiming to have seen evidence firsthand, Xbox Evolved claims Microsoft, Rare, and James Bond movie studio MGM have reached an agreement that will bring the acclaimed shooter, with updated graphics and Xbox Live multiplayer support, to Microsoft's downloadable service "shortly before the new game developed by Activision is released." The Xbox Evolved report also claims that Rare has plans to rerelease other classics from its back-catalog over Xbox Live, including Perfect Dark and the original Banjo-Kazooie, both of which were also created for the N64.

Several hurdles stand in the way of GoldenEye for the Nintendo 64 being ported over. For one, Nintendo has expressed interest in bringing the acclaimed shooter to its own arcade classic depository, the Virtual Console. "Would I love to see it on [the] Virtual Console? Absolutely," Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said of the game in 2006, continuing, "But there are a lot of issues there... Suffice it to say we would love to see it, so we're exploring all the rights issues."

...

Still a rumor...  But eventually a rumor that may come true.

We've got good news and bad news for fans of Rare's groundbreaking first-person shooter, Goldeneye. The good news? Those rumors you've heard about a port of the game for the Xbox Live Arcade are true! The bad news? The release of the title has been delayed indefinitely, due to a licensing disagreement between Microsoft and Nintendo. Sorry to get your hopes up -- we probably should have led with that last part.

To further rub salt in your wounds, 1UP has some sweet details about the game-that-wasn't, which was only two short months from completion. Apparently, the game was a faithful recreation of the N64 classic, including all the maps and weapons from the original, with the addition of multiplayer support over Xbox Live.

Instead of giving up on what would have been one of the greatest XBLA titles to date, we highly encourage everyone to exercise their civil trolling rights in an attempt to convince Nintendo and Microsoft that there's more than enough of our money to go around. Already, thousands of rabid wannabe 00 Agents have signed petitions to bring the game back to the development table -- have you?

Looks like Hines was right when he said that Nintendo can do something about it. 8)

And looks like fhq was right when he was telling Strubes all Nintendo needed to do was throw a curveball. I say give it to Nintendo. They deserve it since they had it originally. Plus, Rare's a flop for Microsoft.

I all I care about is that this game needs to come out with online multiplayer. If it's only on the VC, XBL or both so be it. Both companies need to agree to something soon.

Also, this should have been posted in the other two threads that already exist.

not really, it was never confirmed or cancelled before

It still has the same subject matter. Not to mention you posted this because of a post you have in one of the other topics. You could have just followed up with this.

Back on topic, unfortunately FHQ you're in the minority on this one as far as I can tell. I also don't get why you are so against it, especially since you know there will still be Ad-Hoc multiplayer to play with your friends at home without having to online.

I'm not against it at all, it's just that all your precious Goldeneye memories were in a cramped room with a bunch of tangled cords and stuff, right?

I dunno, it's probably just me, but real life multiplayer is way better than online. Not to mention, Nintendo can do Wi-Fi with it. And Rare could ask for it a certain way, so you can't whine about stupid online.
