Why the 360 can't win this generation...

The 360 has, by far the largest variety of great games, the best online service available on consoles, over 9 million consoles sold worldwide, and what could quite possibly be the best selling game of this generation, Halo 3. Yet, as much as it pains me to say it, even with all this going for it, the 360 coming out as top dog at the end of this generation is starting to seem less and less likely.

Why you ask? Out of the 9 million 360's sold worldwide, 6 million of those have been sold in North America, almost 70% of the amount sold. In Japan, the 360 is basically a non-factor. It has sold horrendously, capturing only a small portion of the Japanese market. In Europe, while not fairing as poorly as it has in Japan, the 360 hasn't capture the big market shares it has in the North America. Simply put, the 360's a trend that hasn't managed to leave North American shores, and just capturing the North American market won't be enough to secure first place in this console generation. Unless the 360 can make some drastic changes in its performance overseas, the PS3 will be left as the only console to capture the large hardcore markets, outside of North America, and that combined with the unstoppable sales of the Wii, may put the 360 squarely in last place for this generation.

Having horrible sales in Japan hurts the 360 a lot. And even releasing high profile jrpgs on it hasn't helped much. They aren't big on fps so Halo 3's release won't be the spectacle that it is here in the States. In Japan, once MGS4 and FFXIII hit the PS3, it will be hard for even the Wii to compete, so the 360 really is in a bad position there without more support from Japanese developers.

i disagree, the ps3 will most certainly never, ever, ever outsell the 360

this is blasphemy

Just like the Wii would never outsell 360, right?

Great topic Cherry. I tip my hat to you, sir.

Probably not in the U.S., but in Japan it probably already has, and when the big games that I mentioned (MGS4 and FFXIII) hit the PS3, the gap between the two in Japan will only get bigger.

You have to consider Japan's market. There was a point when the GBA Micro was outselling the 360. That alone makes my brain hurt (the Micro is useless IMO).

Far as I know, the 360 has sold very well here in England, nearly all my friends have one, and only my spoiled brat of a "friend" has a PS3, and he just lets all 3 of his consoles sit there and gather dust usually. I've just realised that perhaps it doesn't matter which console wins, it doesn't stop you having fun playing them. I mean, the Gamecube still has some awesome games that I love playing, the fact that it got absolutely owned by the PS2 doesn't change a thing.

And as for the PS3 outselling the 360 in Japan, that wouldn't be difficult. Microsoft shifted, what, ten units?

Again what Mia said wait til the games come out...
Also I like the fact that I can put Linux on my PS3

Yeah but, the 360 really hasn't captured a really large portion of Europe's market (maybe 2 million total), so, by the time Sony gets good games for the PS3, there'll be plenty of the market left open to take.

The reason it matters which one wins is because console sales affect how many developers are willing to make games for the console. Basically, this topic was my sad realization that the 360 won't be able to stay ahead in sales, and because of that, they may not be able to keep up all the great games they have coming out. :-\

Very well put Cherry

I think the 360 will pull through. The majority of Wii owners are kids who's parents bought it for them because of the "casual" experience. I'm betting that once the novelty wears off within the year, the 360 will regain control.

Most, actually were just casual gamers, and the odds are, more casual gamers are gonna keep buying it. I would bet the Wii would end up first in console sales, but not in software sales. Really though, the Wii's sales don't seem to be slowing down at all. They're appealing to casual gamers, and I don't see how sales could slow down, regardless of the games that come out.

Once the casual gamers figure out that casual can only take you so far, they'll either sell their Wii's or buy other systems. The Wii is only good as a complementary system IMO. Once the games start getting old (Seriously, Nintendo hasn't introduced any new franchises in forever), that's when they'll stop waving their arms around and pick up another system. The Wii's great and all...I'm gonna have another one by week's end...but I don't see how it will win...at least not in the majority of gamers' hearts. The last three people I know that got one was for their 12th, 10th, and 14th birthday party. Although that's a small number of people, the age range for Wii-owners in MY area is between 8 and 14. Once these kids grow up, I think they'll find out how many mediocre games the Wii had. Then again, the Wii may very well win just because of how many kids there are now. The ESRB is another reason. Casual for the most part is represented by young kids and pre-teens. In this regard, they aren't old enough to purchase T or M rated games. Then when they ask their parents to purchase said games, they raise an eyebrow and read about the blood, guts, language, sexual themes and so on. I still believe the 360 or PS3 will win this gen, unless gamers as a whole are oblivious, IMO.

The problem here is your looking at this entire thing as a hardcore gamer. They aren't looking at Nintendo's big franchises as old because this may be the first or second game in the series they've played. Also, they aren't looking for a ton of good games every year, like us. They're looking for a couple casual games its worth spending their money on, every year. The Wii also isn't only for young kids. Its a system, for the adults out there who have never played a video game before. Basically, they wouldn't know a great game if it hit them in the face. Also, the Wii's games aren't mediocre. The main Nintendo franchises are still some of the best games around.

The majority of gamers out there are clueless. They are for the most part casual gamers who don't know what they are talking about. The Wii is tapping into those gamers and that is where their sustained success is going to come from. Remember, hardcore gamers are only 2% of total gamers.

If the Wii is casual why does Nintendo still say that its a hardcore system when its not?

Also can the Wii stay on top with just First party releases and some casual games?

Because Nintendo doesn't wanna admit they've screwed over hardcore gamers.

Yes. Casual gamers aren't buying like 20 games per year. Give them maybe 5 good games they can play per year and they'll be happy.
