What do you enjoy in a video game?

BioShocker!
The title says it all. Just state stuff like genre, graphical style, modes, etc.

Here's mine just for an example:

1) Good graphics. I'm just shallow, I guess.

2) Not too many puzzles. I buy games to blow the faces off aliens, not do jigsaws. Again, I'm probably just a very shallow gamer.

3) Decent, fun and accesible multiplayer/online. There's nothing like playing with other humans, especially when you get to rub your friends' faces in sore defeats.

4) At least one original thing in it. I'm not picky really, anything will do. From chainsaw bayonets to "New unbelievably crap grenade selection. There's a blue one this time!"

5) Something you can do that is pretty simple but looks unbelievably awesome. Burnout's jumping takedowns were a good example (sorry, I forgot the buzz word EA gave it).

I'll probably post more later. For now, your gaming needs please.

There's a lot of difficult balance that needs to be achieved. For example, challenging but not super frustrating. Something that you feel good about making progress in, but aren't just blowing straight through the game.

Some games, like Call of Duty or whatever, I like to be accurate with weapon models and city layouts.

Graphics can be fun and are a part of the allure to a game, but after 20 minutes that wears off. However, protechnics never get old. But I like them to save the big blast for the end.

Puzzles, puzzles, puzzles. These are the best way to make a game challenging and make you think. True, I love the shoot 'em up, kill everything in sight game once in a while, but other times I like to be pulled into a world and think about the environment and figure out whats goin on or what step to take next.

Consistency is nice, depending what they're going for. Not that I want repetition, but I like the style to stay the same instead of flipping around all the time. I don't really have any solid examples though.

Replay value. There's nothing better than putting 40+ hours into a game to be able to turn around and start over and still have fun and be excited about playing it.

Multiplayer is definately fun. Its a relatively easy way to create lots of replayability and have fun with someone else.

There's lots more. Makes me sound picky, but I do play lots of games that lack a lot of this and still call them fun. But games with these kinds of traits I hold with the highest regards.

I want a videogame to do one of two things:

1) draw me so deep into the developer's imagination that I forget I'm playing a videogame.

or

2) provide some competitive/co-operative, fun, engaging multiplayer action.

That's really it.

1) Good graphics. I'm just shallow, I guess.

No you're not. It's not called a videogame because graphics are an afterthought.

2) Not too many puzzles. I buy games to blow the faces off aliens, not do jigsaws. Again, I'm probably just a very shallow gamer.

Again, no you're not. If it's fun, it's fun.

The story is the most important thing in a game. If it is emotionally driven, lenghty and (perhaps a little cliched), and features good character development and conversation then I am bought. The only other thing that I need is perhaps Voice Overs or at least something resembeling clear speech. Lastly it must have some interesting and exciting music. If it doesnt than it will put me to sleep no doubt.

For me it's a great storyline or objective. I like to explore in a game also. And of course a challenge is a must. I like to figure things out. To me that's fun.

It depends on the genre.

In FPS I enjoy good multiplayer action, weapons that are fun to use, and vehicles that are fun to handle. Some of my favorites are Halo, Halo 2, and Darkwatch.

In rpgs I enjoy having a good battle system, a good level-up system, awesome characters, a good storyline, and good voice acting (system permitting). Some of my favorites are Tales of Symphonia, Tales of the Abyss, Tales of Phantasia, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones, Final Fantasy X, Lunar Silver Star Story, Lunar 2: Eternal Blue, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, and Golden Sun.

In action/adventure games, I enjoy controls that are easy to get used to and awesome puzzles. Bosses that are fun to fight is another good thing. Some of my favorites from this genre are all games from the Zelda series and Tomb Raider: Legend. I think I would also include Metroid and Castlevania in this category, but I'm not sure.

More imitation, less innovation. I've been gaming from the time I could learn the controls, I don't want to see the wheel get reinvented, I want to see it look better.

Good graphics, great gameplay, historical accuracy are musts.

Chainsaws or zombies are very important in purchasing a game for me (and no, I am not kidding)

Online play can make or break a buy for me. I game to play with friends, not sit in my room cut off from society for hours. Co-op, especially online, is very, very vital when purchasing a game. If I hear a game has online co-op, I want it. Army of Two, Crackdown, here I come!

Ok, Samurai Shodown 2 is the perfect model for a game that I would consider "my type of game".

Any game that carries over those qualites, I would call perfect.

I just realised, Gears of War is the perfect example of what I look for in a game. It has great graphics, kick-ass gunplay and the most enjoyable and deep co-op I've experienced since 'Splitters 2.

I could care less about graphics. They need to be good to a certain extent so I actually tell what things are, but besides that I don't care.

But anyway what I need in a game is length/ replay value. Single player games need to be long and multiplayer games need to have an unlimited amount of multiplaying goodness. Thats the main thing

Really great online multiplayer and an actual somewhat innovative storyline.

For RPGs, the battle system can't be too slow or I'll get bored. Graphics don't really matter too much to me either.

Great music can be just as immersing as a good story so that's always a key element to great game. As far as graphics go, sure I like good graphics, but for me "good" is not defined by how they actually look, it's more so if they actually fit the story or if they can portray the point the artist was trying to bring. I also *need* challenge from a video game. I believe as far as video games today, that is the one area they severely lack in, challenge. I can't remember the last time I played a truly hard game other than Ninja Gaiden, but I digress. Lastly, I need to be immersed, I like to go outside of reality, and when a game can do that for me, it's a winner.

I like it to feel like I am visiting somewhere else. Immersive. Colorful, and I like cute.

I like it to be moderately difficult, not too short, and I like there to be exploration, and things that have to be figured out......and to be made by NIntendo? Ha.
