Top 10 Best Games of All Time

crashbandit_93

I love Valve, Naughty Dog, and thats about it! lol
Last year were released some of the most talked about and possibly some of the best games of our generation and maybe even our time. But where do games like Skyrim or Portal 2 rank among the greats of ALL time. I have compiled what I believe to be the top ten best games of all time.

#10 The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Nintendo 1998)
Believed to be the best Zelda game ever released, Ocarina of Time was not only just a great story, but it was so immersive and fun that the story could have been about running to the store to buy groceries just as long as we could play the Ocarina and swing Link’s sword around a bit. The same old cut and paste story of going and saving Zelda (Who, like Princess Peach, should probably invest in some better body guards at this point) from Ganon, but it is different than Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, and Link to the Past for one great reason… you could never put the controller down, all you wanted to do was play it more. All Zelda games hold ground as some of the most impressive and by far fun to play games of all time, but compared to Ocarina of Time they just don’t match up very well.

#9 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Bethesda 2011)
To be quite honest, when I first saw gameplay footage of this game back before it was released I was not at all impressed. Maybe that was because I had played Fallout 3 and it looked like the same game just not set in a post-apocalyptic Washington D.C. But when I finally got a chance to sit down and play it at a friend’s house, I was immediately hooked. I was pleasantly surprised with enhanced graphical quality (compared to Oblivion and Fallout 3 of course), original race and character designs (I mean seriously a race of cat people!), and an immersive experience like none other; I had no choice but to immediately run over to GameStop and pick up the special edition with an exclusive pre-order only copy of the map of Skyrim… which I got post-release cause I’m cool like that :P.
Some might say that the glitches one encounters in the game are too much for them but for me, it makes the experience all the more fun. I mean seriously, when I can hop on my horse and climb up the side of a mountain no big deal, THAT is fun. And with the creation pack coming out for PC soon, I might just have to head on over to GameStop and pick up another copy of the game for PC.

#8 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Infinity Ward 2009)
Now I know what your thinking. CoD games have no business in the top ten games of all time list, and yes I would usually agree; but this game was possibly one of the best shooters of all time. It followed the rules of a good first person shooter and a kick butt story to boot. Oh and did I mention composing great Hans Zimmer stopped by to do the soundtrack for it… yeah that is enough for me to play your game or watch your movie any day. But what else did MW2 do for the FPS genre that other series’ before it missed the mark on? If you guessed amazing online experience than you were right because it took Halo 3’s formula and made it so much better that MW2 has arguably the best online experience of any console game ever. One might argue that Black Ops was better, but in all honesty it was just a copy paste of the set up MW2 used and then plastered new maps all over it.
But anywho, MW2 will always be a favorite of mine because it was just an all around amazing game. It was solid all around and the only downside to the Modern Warfare series in a whole was that Hans Zimmer didn’t do the soundtrack for games 1 and 3 

#7 Batman: Arkham City (Rocksteady 2011)
To be quite honest, I was never really sold on the quality of this game (like I was for most 2011 releases except for Portal 2) despite the glorious reviews the game got from IGN and Game Rant until I picked it up. After playing Arkham Asylum and being quite blown away with how amazingly fun it was, its easy to understand why I wasn’t going to be easily won over about the game. Most fans I would say expected a thriller like nothing else and like many sequels that came out last year, they were not disappointed. Arkham City not only lived up to Arkham Asylum’s quality, it blew it out of the water. It took the formula that Asylum used so well and made it so much better I wanted to run outside and scream “FINALLY I CAN GRAPPLE ANYWHERE NOW!!!”
My biggest question I had about this game going in was how were the people at Rocksteady going to cram so many villains into the story and not make it bloated and overstuffed? I still don’t know how they did it, but they certainly did. You never feel like too much is going on, or that there are too many villains. They all flow together so well it feels like you are living out the comic book series! And may I just say, playing as Catwomen, Nightwing, and Robin was one of the most fulfilling experiences I’ve had in a LOOONNGGG time. Especially after the last game when I was stapled to Batman’s butt crack for twelve some hours.
All in all this game will always be known as THE best game in a genre (the superhero genre that is) that usually disappoints. But not only will it be known for revolutionizing the genre, but because it was able to do that, it earns its spot in the top ten best of all time

#6 Crash Bandicoot (Naughty Dog 1996)
My personal favorite game of all time (which might be why I put it on this list) was not just a small title when it came out in 1996. This was Sony’s poster child that was marketed as Sony’s Mario (because Sony didn’t have one). Crash was not only supposed to compete with Mario, but it was also made fun of Mario throughout the whole game. When you were smashing boxes, jumping on turtles, and a villain that was the complete opposite of Bowser that was Big and a turtle; Crash’s entire existence in 1996 was to make fun and compete with Mario. Not only did it gain a cult following in Japan and a pretty decent following in America, it inspired a dance in Japan that was later featured in Crash 2.
But down to the nitty gritty, why was Crash such a great game? Simply this, it was #1 the most graphically advanced PS1 game ever released and is still one of the hardest game even compared to today’s games. It was the first platformer to be completely 3D and not only that, it was a beautiful design. It was original, fun, and exciting. I can remember me and my friends when I was five sitting around the Playstation just in aw of the game. It wasn’t just a fun kiddy game that kids would enjoy, the entire family can enjoy the game.
The apparent lack of substantial story may bother many people, but it was the lack of story that made the game fun. You didn’t know how or why Crash washed up on the beach, all you know is he has a bone to pick with Cortex and you are more than happy to help him do it.
All in all, it’s a very clever and original game that will always rank among the best games of all time.

TOP FIVE!!!!!!!

#5 Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune (Naughty Dog 2007)
Being a huge fan of Naughty Dog in general, I was very excited to play their new series. And when I popped it into Jeremy’s Playstation, all I remember from the moment it begin was just utter amazement and aw. If it deserves to be in the top five it can solely be on the bases of it is the most amazing animation for any game anywhere period. And this was not contained to the cut scenes that are so typically the best part of most cinematic games. No the developers over at Naughty Dog were able to seamlessly sew cut scenes with gameplay in such a way that I couldn’t tell when the movie and gameplay started. Many have called it the modern Indiana Jones and I couldn’t agree more. I am just glad that the second Uncharted didn’t stink horribly and I hope that a possible forth one does NOT include aliens.

#4 Super Mario 64 (Nintendo 1996)
Is there any discussion here? I mean seriously, the game that I’m pretty sure everybody owned at some point in their life (except me cause I was a loser). Who didn’t enjoy the levels, the bosses, and the almost impossible last star of the game? The game is in a league of its own and very few games can claim to have been so wildly popular and perform as a game to boot. There just isn’t anything else to say about it! Mario 64 is one of the best games of all time and that’s that.

#3 Halo (Bungie 2001)
Wolfenstein created the FPS, Doom popularized it, and Halo perfected it. Just as simple as that. Halo was a game created exclusively for the Xbox and became the poster child of the system. In stead of having a fun child’s character as their poster boy, master chief brought a grunge and adult feel to the new Xbox and made the system so wildly popular that few games can compete with how amazing it was. The story was pretty similar to Valve’s 1998 game Half-Life with an alien infestation and you (the protagonist) have to stop them essentially. The story was meh compared to that of Halo 2 and Halo 3, but the classic meter on this game is off the charts putting it into the upper echelon of video games period.

#2 Portal (Valve 2007)
Originally released as just a small bonus to Valve’s Orange Box release that had great games like all three Half-Life 2’s and Team Fortress 2, Portal took the gaming world by surprise as a game that quite simply is perfect. And that is not just an opinion, it is fact. Just sit down and play the game and try to find one thing wrong with it. I have played it five different times looking for some sort of glitch or issue with it and I can’t find one. It is so good that it deserves to be number one, but number one will go to a game that takes classic to a whole new level.

#1 Super Mario Bros. 3 (Nintendo 1988)
You are probably shocked to see this, but SMB3 reestablished Mario in the gaming world at the time. It made up for the woes of SMB2 and improved upon the good parts of SMB1. It brought some new content to the table as to power abilities and the controversial tanooki suit’s first appearance in the series. The game was very impressive for its day and took the series to a whole new level. It helped launch the Mario series into the 90s where Mario was possibly the most popular character of the time. SMB3 earns the trophy for best game of all time for replay ability, creativeness, expansion upon the already solid Mario universe, and a fun experience that is still fun twenty four years later.

I’m sure that some of you disagree with me and that is welcome. I would love to hear what your top 10 best games of all time are. Share your thoughts!

Not a bad list at all.

I would still throw a Castlevania and/or Final Fantasy game on the list just for good measure though. :D

yeah like OLD Final Fantasy, before it turned to poop like it is now. Castlevania... got to be hoenst, I have never played that game. lol :-X

I haven't played a few of those.

I don't think I would have CoD on there at all, though. Among influential fps games, there are better examples, such as Half-Life.

And though I personally don't enjoy them, there should be at least one GTA in there for the influence they have had on that genre.

I must agree on the half-life point. its a great fps but i mean in terms of online play mw2 pushed the console field light years forward with not only popularizing it, but making halo's already great online format into an even better version of it. half life is the poster boy of valve and valve in my book are geniuses. GTA wouldn't be my first pick for a sandbox game. i mean if i was going to pick one id pick assassin's creed.

Decent list, but you forgot Goldeneye and Resident Evil 2 and Morrowind and Metal Gear Solid and, and, and.... :P

GoldenEye I'll give you but meh on Resident Evil 2. never been much of a RE fan. some of that is a avid obsession with Valve so I prefer Left 4 Dead, but ya know lol. Metal Gear Solid ranks in the top 25 somewhere. the series has been a bit week of late.

not to mention Duke Nukem!

ha at least u guys put up like. GOOD GAMES. a few of my nintendo fanboy friends on facebook thought it was the highest of dishonors to rank ocarina of time at #10. lol. tbh not a huge zelda fan lol
and gah i forgot about DUKE NUKEM!!! GAH

OoT is a fan favorite but I would actually put Link to the Past up there for a Zelda game.

I also think Halo 2 did a lot more for online fps multiplayer than CoD for what it's worth.

It's because there are games that are great on a technical level, but they don't really compare with the games that you love.

Like I think Bioshock is a fantastic game and one that you could use for the argument that games are an art! But it's not really one of my favorite games and I wouldn't put it in a top ten list.

And also I doubt any of the Tales games would make a top ten list and I would really disagree with that. Tales of the Abyss would definitely be on my top ten list. :D

Haha yea I am survival horror junkie so there'd probably be a couple on my top 10 list. And yes I would have to put OOT at number one but not because I am a fanboy, it's just the game that had the most impact on me. It was the first 3D game I ever played and the experience was incredible for the time.

see i grew up on the PS1 and playe 64 games at friend's houses so i never played OoT until a few years ago when I was able to track a copy down (which was unbelievably difficult btw) and i wasn't like blown away by it. Crash was the first video game I ever played so I guess thats why I would favor Crash or Spyro over Zelda.

I feel as though OoT was great for its time but didn't age well. The mechanics are awesome but the 3D graphics don't hold up as well as 2D sprites for older games like SMB3 (like you mentioned) or Link to the Past (which I mentioned).

well i mean SM64 aged real well. i mean if we were to go back and play it now itd still be the same great mario we left behind almost 14 years ago. I just don't think that Zelda is a great series. I mean have u seen Nintendo's official order of games? There is a three way split in the universe! That in and of itself makes it confusing. Altho i will say this, best game soundtrack ever

I would also agree with the Link to the Past. It is still very playable and very easy on the eyes. (Personally I feel is one of the best in the series) The OoT graphics are not that noticeable to someone like me, being that I dwell in retro gaming territory. Until I come out of that dark room and look at something in the present generation. Then I go whhaaaat? Gaming graphics look like that now? :lol

Making a top ten games of all time would be a futile effort for someone like me. Maybe I could come closer to a top 100, I dunno, maybe. ::D

A Gradius or an R-Type needs to fit in there somewhere. They set some standards for a genre that has been lost in the shuffle of modern gaming.

It would be interesting to see a list of the most influential games of each genre.

Good point on a shoot 'em up, Retro. Gradius 4 and Darius Twin are among my favorites for that game style.

Duke Nukem should not be on a list of best games ever. The entire thing was a parody, just a more juvenile version of Doom and Quake. As much as Valve has pushed some envelopes, most of their early work relied on copying the success id games.

yeah but i mean every shooter of the time was essentially a Doom rip off cause Doom was just so fantastice

very Nice list. Although everyone obviously has different opinion about their favorite I do like your reasoning behind your choices
