Text Chat available in Mario Kart Wii...no Voice Chat

The Wii is woefully behind the curve in terms of online features, a problem that Nintendo is slowly trying to fix with upcoming AAA titles like Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Kart Wii. While the former won't offer much by way of in-game communication, the latter will in fact feature chat room options, allowing users to text it up with anyone on their Wii Friends list.

IGN reports that the texting option in Mario Kart Wii is limited to people you've swapped friends codes with (of course), and text-chatting is only possible before, and presumably after, racing matches. Text entry via Wii Remote is assumed, and IGN wagers that USB keyboards may be supported as well, as keyboard support has been included in most Wii software.

It's no voice chat, to be sure, but at least we'll be able to argue with friends over the fairness of blue shells.

The only problem I have..is that you can face pretty much anyone, but you can only text chat with Friends, AND only before and after matches. I'd much rather prefer to poke fun at my friends through voice chat in matches instead.

Ugh, get out of the stone age Nintendo.

I knew Reggie was talking about adding a voice chat feature, but come on...

I don't mind it that much, voice chat is something I'm more than able to live without, especially considering the mass of little kids that own Wiis.

*thinks of Live* *looks at the amount of kids with Wiis*
Oh dear god....>.<

Actually. Even though this sounds alittle bit cruel and wrong I thought it would be funny if on Live one of those little kids were sneaking on their parent's or elder sibling's 360 while they were asleep and woke up and found them on the 360. And then all you hear over the mic was a fight break out. Sure a bit wrong but, I would probably laugh.

Good point! :lol Although older people can be just as bad *looks at Xbox Live*

Nintendo's just afraid of what could be. Honestly, Mario Kart's not something you're going to see people argue too much over, rather than an actual racing game like NFS.

Fhq makes a good point. Xbox Live has enough brats on it as it is, think about the Wii. O_o;;

I still say PS3 rules as far as online.

Apparently, Mario Kart Wii doesn't have text chat.

Alright, so remember how I said that Mario Kart for the Wii will support text chatting? Well I was completely wrong. Or rather, Nintendo has no idea what the hell texting means. Here's the deal, Mario Kart will only support pre-determined phrases that people can send to each other, which Nintendo will provide. So phrases like "Hello", "Lets race!" and "Lets have fun!" are some of the things that are safe to assume will be available.

Thank God you're here to protect us Nintendo! I was really worried you were slipping. Thank you so much for babysitting the fan base and keeping them safe from the pedophiles and creeps of the Internet. If you're mad about this, than you're obviously one of the evil people. No doubt that you want to send children messages like "Your tears turn me on." and "I have a lollipop in my pants for you." You people make me sick.

Not anymore it isn't.

Honestly, how paranoid do they have to be to not include voice chat? They're acting like an overprotective mother.

Sad, indeed. Their outlook is really outdated. I wonder how long it will be before Nintendo joins us in 2008 technology? :lol
