Review: PS Network Plus. What I did and what I saw and is it worth it?

MegaDrive20XX

Segatron Genesis... call me the wizard.
I spent $49.99+tax for 12 months (plus 3 months free on top of that for a total of 15 months) for a nice package deal. I was a bit worried that I wasn't gonna get my full bang for my buck. Yet I was dead wrong.

I'll just flat out say that this works VERY similar to Xbox Live Arcade. As long as you are a member, you can play or download these games for free. If not, you are forced to buy the game or cannot play it all if you are not a PSN Plus member. So to all you crazy coo-coo kids, don't say it's bad when you already have a familiar service of your own.

As soon I log into the store, I'm greeted with that logo above "new releases" and presented with a bright white background that humbly tells me, "Elevate your game". I saw the PS3 game, InFamous as a full purchase or download the full game to play the 1 hour demo which surprisingly can earn you trophies still! I'm impressed Sony is attempting direct downloads again since the success of Burnout Paradise. After the 1 hour demo is done, the game will ask if you wish to purchase the full game for $29.99. Cool, but I'd rather have the actual game and if you don't already well shame on you!

Moving along, I see the word FREE on every other little box. Free full games that were presented such as PS1 game: Rally Cross, WipeOut HD PS3 & PSP Mini Game: Age of Zombies. Normally you would pay over $31+tax for all three of those games, but here they are for free just for being a member. If you like to think happy thoughts, just think "Hey I only paid $20+ for this subscription so far!"

Yet, wait there's more. DISCOUNTS. Did I grab your eyeballs? I hope so. The brand new Fat Princess DLC (Which adds Pirates, GIANTS, and Ninjas!) was discounted at a $3.99 instead of $4.99. For retro fans, Midway Games entered the fray with 50% off their four arcade classics for $2.50 a piece. Mortal Kombat 2, Rampage, Gauntlet II, and Rampart.
Tik games presents us with a truckload of goodies and FREE DLC by a handful. Full PSN games like Cuboid, Hamster Ball, Magic Orbz, Interpol: The Trail of Dr. Chaos, and Mahjong Tale: Ancient Wisdom were $7.99 each instead of $9.99. Each respecting DLC for these games are totally FREE for the entire month. Two higher priced PSN games such as Smash Cars and Wakeboarding HD are now $11.99 instead of $14.99. Smash Cars DLC pack is free as well.

So to sum up all these goodies, discounts, and eye candy. We all have to ask, the big two questions. Is it worth it and why?

Now for those who are great at math, you just saved $85.85 in savings for the first month alone. Multiply this estimate by the number 14 for next month, as in how many more months I have left on my subscription and I'll just say the PSN Plus pays for itself and then some. That convinces me that Sony wants to reward you greatly for joining.

Is it worth it? Let's say you didn't have these games. I would say yes. Just remember there is a DIET COKE version for $17.99 for 3 months if you wish to test drive for a while. Regardless, just keep in mind you are guaranteed these types of benefits every single month. Otherwise, I will say no if you don't care about everything listed here and wish to continue with your free normal services.

Why should you get this? Free goodies, more to come, the values/discounts, first come first serve bases on betas, and early access to demos. You're also suppose to get an entire year of QORE Online Magazine for free as well ($24.99 value), but I'm not sure when exactly that is going to kick in. I will update this later.

Overall, I'm pleased with the presentation.

Review Part 2. Weekly Vs. Monthly.

A big surprise for us all is to see the PLUS turn into a weekly and monthly process.

Looks like you get WEEKLY goodies now and QORE is free, except you get the newest issues for free each month from when it is started until the subscription is over. So $24.99 for a yearly magazine is yours FREE! Also, another PSP Mini game was given away for free this week as well ($6.99 value). Discounts as well on Super Stardust being $5.00 instead of $9.99 is a nice touch.

MONTHLY, is a different structure it seems. The first patch will always stay until the month is over or until the first Tuesday of the month.

It's really hard for me to say, "NO STAY AWAY! $50 you could buy a game!". Since now I have something to look forward to each week and month now. I'm on the fence about this one!

Actually, you saved $35.86 because you still have to account for the amount you paid for the service for that first month. Not trying to burst your bubble or anything since you're still saving. :)

If there is more stuff such as DLC and whatnot actually being discounted then this could be really good. It all depends on what type of gamer you are. For instance, does your favorite game have DLC? Do you play demos?

It's similar to Amazon's Prime service. They always have free shipping, but if you pay for Prime, you get free 2-day shipping. So it depends on whether you buy a lot on Amazon to have that be worth it.

Honestly, I think it's cool and when I get a PS3 I'll probably get it.

@Aleeock, I only know one other person who is a friend of Mai's that has it.

@Creepin' Correct on the price. Yet, that 1 time fee of $50 covers much much more and yes there is more DLC discounted this week actually.

That is a pretty good observation to compare it to Amazon.com and I humbly agree that it does depend on what kind of gamer you are. As I can see from the flashy advertisements and such, you can tell Sony is trying hard to grasp the hardcore audience once again.

Yet, I'm pretty pleased with the goodies and it's presentation. Now we're saving over $45+ (and still growing) compared to the first part of the review I wrote with weekly updates and once a month updates. To me, this program steps up a notch compared to any paid service. I don't want to bash Xbox Live, but who actually goes out on a limb to grant you free games, an online magazine subscription, early beta invites, early demo access sometimes, and let you test a game before you buy for a full hour on a console or portable as long as you are a member? NetFlix? No/Maybe. GameFly? No. GameTap? Yes, but you pay $79.95 a year to play all you want, games that are classics, barely any original titles, and it's PC only. Xbox Live has only given us 3 free Xbox Live Arcade games in the past which were Aegis Wings, Undertow, and that Dino Dorito Game which caused me to go on a Dorito craze for 2 weeks >.>

Yet in all due respect, I love both services (XBL and PSN +) yet if I had to choose one atm, it would be this. I pay these guys $50 just once a year and I get a boatload of goodies to add to my collection to download guaranteed? I'm game and that's all I'm saying. It's like Christmas every Tuesday now, I don't know what to expect, but I'm going to get something for spending that $50 on something for someone else! You give a little, you get a little...more I guess?

PlayStation Plus: Worth it or not?

I've been umming and aarring over this for quite a while now and I can't quite make up my mind. It sometimes comes across as little more than a subscription discount card. Granted I have never accessed the rest its content, so I could be way off the mark.

Are there any other subscribers here? If so would you recommend it?

Any help would be great, thanks :)

Re: PlayStation Plus: Worth it or not?

Well..I did a little write up on it not too long ago.

Re: PlayStation Plus: Worth it or not?

Nice one, that's great. Thanks :-)

I'll maybe search a little deeper next time. I must have missed that thread when looking :-S

Re: PlayStation Plus: Worth it or not?

Well, after reading that other thread it is a lbetter than I was expecting it to be. I'll most probably sign up for it the New Year or something.

In fact, that can be my New Year's Resolution - Subscriber to PlayStation Plus. I'm sure I can stick to that that :)

Re: PlayStation Plus: Worth it or not?

I would recommend it to people who download a lot of digital content. For example, I don't buy much DLC or even PSN games. So the amount I would be saving would not equal to the amount I would have spent for the service. Meaning I would actually be overpaying for the content as opposed to saving money. That's my take on it.

Re: PlayStation Plus: Worth it or not?

I'm not that a big fan of DLC either, but I think I'd probably buy more PSN games were there some kind of discount or offer on them. I'm always coming across ones that grab my attention, I just resent paying full-whack for anything that isn't physical format, you know? I'm intrigued by it all now and am going to give it a trial at least.

Gonna cancel my subscription to PC Gamer magazine to cover the costs. The magazine sucks, so I won't miss it. I was auto-switched over to it when, sadly, PC Zone went bust a few months back. PlayStation Plus seems like a better alternative for now :)

I'll let you know how I get on.

Does anyone besides Mega have this? I'm still on the fence. The free month I got wasn't long enough for me to take advantage of it since I was on vacation for about two weeks of it. :lol

I picked it up and my opinion still stands. You do save but you have to wait to see if the content you want will even go on sale. "Free" games are basically just rentals. If you ever stop paying for the service, you don't "own" them anymore and can't play them.

I say it's hit or miss. I don't really recommend it but if the content you want usually goes on sale for PSN+ users then it might be worth it.

Oh, in that case I probably would not benefit from it. Although, it may be useful as a way to demo a game before buying it, from what it sounds like.

Strubes has it too.

I still stand by my opinion of how awesome it is and it's a free rental for the entire year. Hell, since we compared it to renting. Look at Netflix. $9.99 for unlimited movies per MONTH Vs. $49.99 for one fee for all those games you got for free.

$119.88 + tax (one year of netflix) Vs. $49.99 + tax (one year of PSN +)

Hate to say it, but that's still a solid deal. Even $10 cheaper than XBox Live. (Not counting Amazon.com's random badass deals)

Does this apply to big, mainstream titles? I think that's the only way to fairly judge the two. So far I've only seen older games get the "free" treatment. Haven't seen any new releases.

I've seen discounts on new PS1 releases for import purposes. Yet, the odds of knowing which title does not require much reading is the tricky part.

The BETA on some games is the part that does hold me back and those PSP Minis are a hit and miss. Which I fully agree to you Creepin. It's always an older title and not spanking new sadly. However, this program was created for new PS3 consumers from the looks of it. Yet, I am the kind of person who loves to test out ALL the features of any program has to offer. After spending 1 year, I've ended up with games I will NEVER play or games I wouldn't touch with a dead animal. (i.e. RALLY CROSS or Disney's Lilo & Jock-Itch)

So, regardless of the savings. It is not beneficiary to those at all times.
