This is a poll from GameFAQs.com asking about gamer's feelings towards the announcement of the thumbstick add on for the 3DS.

About 53% responded they thought it was a terrible idea in general, or a poor solution to a bigger problem. About 27% said they thought it was clunky, but worked (a fairly neutral response) with the rest thinking it was an alright idea. This is interesting to me, because it shows a pretty clear division- and I don't think this is a sleeper hit solution for the woes of the 3DS. Yeah, sales have picked up following the massive price drop but this move is going to provoke the wrath of consumers (especially those who adopted early).

Thoughts on any of this?

It is hard to come up with an opinion for me on this one because... the thing looks ugly but is it completely unnecessary? I am not sure. I don't think there was ever a point in the life of the DS/3DS where I have said "oh boy i wished there was a second analog" because most of the time the touch screen would work as a replacement for that second analog.

However maybe it is needed. There were times with the PSP where I did feel I needed a second analog (kingdom hearts and metal gear solid peace walker come to mind).

Basically only time will tell if we need it or not...but gosh they really need to make it look less...intrusive? bulky? ugly?

It's a solution for early adopters since it's painfully obvious that a revision is on the way. It looks clunky, but haven't read anything about how it feels yet.

I guess, if you're going to have titles that were originally meant for 2 sticks and extra shoulder buttons, it makes sense (eg. Resident Evil, Metal Gear 3.)

As a gamer and as a consumer, it causes me to have mixed feelings about the 3DS, because I don't have one yet. And it begs me to ask questions that shouldn't come to mind.
Why did they feel it was necessary? Do they have flunkies for hardware engineers? It looks so much like an afterthought. Am I looking at an add-on that will be supported by a hand full of games? Will the 3DS plus the add-on be the size of an Atari Lynx? Is that a 3DS Extended Slide Pad you got in your pocket?
It so much causes me to think about the Sega Genesis and the CD add-on, for some strange reason. The cosmetic design and the black 3DS in the photo I'm looking at brings it to mind.

Hm. You're probably right about that. I wouldn't have thought of it but that makes sense.

Either way, it smells of desperation.

This is part of the reason why I haven't bothered getting a cover for my 3DS. I will probably go through a couple of them just for the upgrades.
