It's DEBATE...omg...this is getting nowhere. I'll leave this thread alone. :lol

Oh, and WHINING about friend codes? I thought that'd be under "discussing". I guess since it's not your view, it's whining though.

Yes, it is whining about Friend Codes, since no one is saying they're great. The closest to is "deal with it".

well, now that he's gone...

I just thought of something. If they HAD invented the internet back then, woulnt the friend codes be like 60 digits?

Hm. Arguing about debating is way off topic. I even feel dumber from reading all this nonsense.

Lamenting about friend codes is, I'd say, kind of off topic. Eh. ::)

But having an NES that had online capabilities would have been way cool. If Nintendo was bold enough to brave the possibility of losing everything for "online" capabilities, imagine what we'd have today.

We'd definitely be a few steps further in the online staircase.

But I guess they just didn't want to risk it...

There was no World Wide Web in the '80s, only very limited direct dial modems such as the Famicom MODEM and the Gameline for Atari 2600. Real time competition between gamers just wasn't viable, technologically or financially, over these very slow dial up connections.

The X-Band service for SNES and Genesis debuted in the early 90's, but by then the Internet went public and the online gaming focus shifted to PCs and console manufacturer's didn't want to associate themselves with PC gaming.

The Dreamcast had limited online success, but ultimately failed, and this furthered Nintendo's disdain toward Internet gaming. It wasn't until Microsoft, which was already in the PC business, created Xbox Live that the gap between consoles and the Internet finally narrowed. Now, it's obvious that Nintendo regrets their shunning of the Internet and is trying to play catch up with the Wii.

And, like I said earlier, the friend code thing is only to help Nintendo dodge lawsuits stemming from stalking cases.
