Before the internet was created, Nintendo had a phone jack somewhere in the NES that would hook up to every other NES that was hooked up in the world, creating an internet. But alas, the feature was disabled before the NES shipped. Now, what would the world be like if it came through?

The world would have been connected and revolutionized by Nintendo.

aha! this proves my theory that nintendo is afraid of the internet!

Nintendo is not "afraid" of the internet. They have the Wii with FREE WiFi playing and you can bring the GC online [its not realy used though].

It might be the easiest method they have for tracking games and people playing for now.

Hey... at least we have online Nintendo games... just support them, play them... and they are getting better.

It could have also failed big time... and brought Nintendo down.

See... back then, it was VERY expensive. Sure... maybe it could have revolutionized things... but what if Nintendo went under "revolutionizing" gaming?

There wasn't 1 successful online feature for the console *REALLY* until Xbox live came out. sure, some systems offered online play and other 3rd party companies tried (even in the SNES times). BUT... they all failed.

Ps2 free online play, DS free online play, and Wii free online play (IMO) are revolutionizing gaming. Sure... Xbox live has more features... but you have to pay for them. PC online gaming... is generally free sans MMORPG games. Once consoles start adapting the PC online gaming format, I think they will be more successful.

My 2 cents.

Hey, I lived in Venezuela for about a year and a half.

This is all just a bunch of "what if's". What if Sony came out with a system to compete with the NES? What if pigs actually DID have wings? I don't really see how this is up to debate.

The Famicom MODEM was released in Japan and was widely popular not as a gaming device but as a stock market ticker. It's common for even low income Japanese to play the stock market and this feature helped put the Famicom in many homes in which it would have otherwise not appeared. But it did not support online gaming, just news, weather, game tips and such, with a few mini-games available for download. Nintendo had plans for a similar device for the U.S., hence the port underneath, but ultimately decided it wouldn't sell very well outside of Japan.

Nintendo is wary of allowing anonymous online connections through the Wii and DS out of fear that pedophiles will try to communicate with children. The friend code requirement is just a legal out for them in case someone is stalked via a Nintendo device. It all started with the Pictochat controversy:

Debate =/= discuss.

I love how in every thread you pull out the "=/=" deal. :lol

This has become a debate...and debating and discussing almost go hand in hand. I don't know why you'd use the =/= trick for that.

It was never intended to be a debate, we're just talking about it. And the only thing being debated is Friend Codes, so I don't see what you're getting at.

And I do seem to use the =/= a lot lately.

"would Nintendo have revolutionized the internet?" That's open for debate/discussion...those two are basically the same. Debate is if there's two opposing viewpoints, which there is when it comes to everything in this thread. Therefor....it's all up to debate.

But no one is debating anyone else, they're just saying what they think, then whining about Friend Codes.
