Microsoft Lawyer thinks Master Chief in Unreal is a great tribute

I think this is kinda cool. :)

We're sure you saw the delightful cross-platform mash-up that put everyone's favorite Spartan smack dab in the middle of PS3 shooter Unreal Tournament 3. While we got a kick of it, we couldn't help but wonder how Uncle Bill and his army of lawyers felt. According to one of those legal eagles, MS thinks that it's the bee's knees.

Here it is straight from the source: "The developers aren't selling the mod, they're not monetizing Microsoft's IP, they're just creating something to share their love of the Master Chief on a new platform. It's a great thing for us and a great thing for the gaming community." Apparently, we've got the Game Content Usage Rules to thank. Now ... do those apply to G.I. Joe?

That looks really cool. I can only imagine people on the PS3 seeing that and going "WTH?!? Why is Master Chief in a PS3 game?" :lol

This actually makes me want to get the game for some reason. I just think it'd be really cool to play as Master Chief in the UT universe. :)

Wow...this is going to get nasty..but how is this possible??

It's completely legal. It's user created, not done by an actual developer. Microsoft can't sue anyone over this one. If Microsoft would have aloud the SDK for UT3 on the 360 we could have seen UT3 on 360 and could have seen like Kratos or Solid Snake on there from users (even though people can do that on the PS3 still) and still would be alright.

My first reaction was that it was an April Fool's joke.

Having reaffirmed the date as per the gregorian counting of time, I'm at a loss to comprehend this. You say it was user created, but with what magical toolset was this amount of customization possible?

Yea completely possible. First they modded it on the PC side of things then just ported over to the PS3 via jump drive. It's pretty darn easy to do.

Yep, there's also a Spawn mod, Marcus Fenix mod, and Cloud Strife mod (though that one hasn't made it to the PS3 side of things yet). Having user created content for the PC and PS3 version is awesome. I'm definitely getting it.

I am actually surprised that MS is cool with that WITHOUT prior permission.

Unless the 2 companies worked it out before hand and kept it hush hush... and It's MS's joke to Sony.

Who knows... It is kind of cool though :) and I am very tempted to get this game.

well it wasn't done by Sony themselves if it had been it would be a different story.
I know it wasn't done by Sony, I was referring to Midway.

Most companies wouldn't dig this without permission... which leads me to think the companies may have discussed this and decided to leave it as a surprise.

Maybe not though.

Well they can't exactly go after the fan who designed the character.
Just like Square couldn't go after the fan remake of Chrono Trigger?
