KILLER INSTINCT 3 on the rise?

Wide Mass appeal is what GOTY is all about, the GOTY is always the years bestselling game, hence they always release a (GOTY Edition of that game the following year).

Street Fighter 4 could not possibly be that good. Only if its online mode will cause mass appeal, an online mode has yet to be announced.

How does Killer Instinct appeal to the masses in any way? It is a game targeted at the hardcore fighter gamer, which if you haven't noticed has been dying in the past years. And you see GOTY doesn't always mean the best selling. If that were true then Wii Play would be GOTY. Street Fighter 4 is gunna be better already because it already has alot of media going for it already. Not to mention that there is gunna be a new Street Fighter movie that's gunna be coming out which will most likely advertise for the game.

Perhaps but I wouldnt go as far as saying that the genre has been dying out. Its just the fact that there really havent been that many fighters recently that were amazing that people can think of.

Brawl may have been the last good fighter (which really isn't a fighter) to come out. But, what was before that? Dead or Alive 4 back when the 360 launch? The Fighting Genre is the genre that is the one that is dying the fastest out of any genre. How many fighters are released per year that aren't KOF (which is released every year just adding a couple new things here and there)?

well brawl is not your normal type of fighter XD.

What? The best game released that year is what goty is about. Sales figures has absolutely nothing to do with it.

I would say that is a result of the genre dying. No one wants to spend money, making a great game for a genre which is shrinking in size.

As Zi said since the launch of the 360 there has been bare and bones when it comes to fighters. And the fact that there haven't been any newer fighters since 2005 indicates that it is dying. I would like to count the KOF's in this but the fact that they release one every year with little update doesn't warrant it anything.

Oh I forgot. We have 3 good fighters coming soon. Tekken 6, Street Fighter 4, and Killer Instinct 3. And most likely Street Fighter 4 and Tekken 6 are the ones that are gunna be on the top of sales when the 3 of them hit stores.

But thats what we need, companies willing to take risks to revitalize so called dying or in this case shrinking interest in genre size. If they bring something prolifically amazing out then people will no doubt decide to come back and get a renewed heart and spirit in these amazing games in these genres [besides the release of the sequels]

And this should be done by making half of the game into another genre and having the fighting aspect become corollary, as you suggested? That isn't so much taking a risk as it is transforming the game into a mash-up of several genres.

@ Fr0dus, don't forget Soul Calibur IV.

Developers must change, innovate, add in, experiment, all in the name of revitalizing, restoring, and giving gamers the games they need. No matter the cost nor odds.

And look what has happened to Mortal Kombat. The last 3 games have been pretty much garbage. And the next one is gunna be worse.

Then something must be wrong, they must be experimenting wrong or maybe theve sequelized enough to the point where there is no where left to go and maybe its time to can the series?

I never disputed that. I said what you were suggesting wouldn't make the fighting aspect of the game secondary. It would also probably lower the quality of both elements.

And that is where the problem lies. Developers tried to add extra into the game when really the game is meant to be a fighter nothing else. If you take a fighter and make it into an Adventure/Fighter (like MK) you get a garbage Adventure game that you have to play through to unlock all the characters. If it is supposed to be a fighter leave it a fighter or just don't attempt to do the game cause then you are basically trying to sucker in the non-experienced gamer into buying your game.

What that is a frugally frivolous aspect of the game, making it where you had to advance in an adventure to unlock the character, totally pointless. However, perhaps they imagined that that is where MK was to go, the new direction? Regardless, something needs to be done to innovate and revitalize the genre. I do not think that just sticking to the same timeless aspect of simple "click on this character, choose arena, fight" will work but there needs to be something more captivating and immersive to the entire genre, perhaps KIIII will incorporate and bring something new to the table.

How do you think it should be done to do a fighter then if you don't want to pick your character and then fight in a fighter. And say if they do the RPG aspect then that gets rid of any balance that the game had.

what i do like is to be able to customise the skills of my fighters like on DBZ budokai 3 and naruto ultimate ninja 3. but RPG elements would destroy balance, unless the RPG elements were only present in the 1 player mode

It could be an easy balance to make. I think there is enough space now to where they could make an elaborately detailed and exhaustive Singple Player (or even Co-Op) mode, like the Subspace Emissary but of course tons less repetitive and more serious with full fledged cinema and cutscenese as well as modifiable skills as in Justice League or Marvel UIltimate Alliance style.

For the multiplayer regular mode, still incorporate the same usual aspects but maybe instead of relying on people memorizing all of the skills or (in Mortal Kombat they display the numerous button combinations on screen), get rid of that and maybe map the skills to buttons or even better allow the selection of skills at the onset, outfits and items and such. It could add tons more customization.

With these in place the game could definitely be perhaps excellent at least.

Killer Instinct... LOVED the game.

I have the N64 game... and it rocks.

It just depends on what they do with the game. I mean... if they change it... it could kick the series in the jimmy and ruin it forever. Or... it could be very cool. We'll see what they do with it.
