Iwata apologizes for Nintendo's poor E3 showing

"We are sorry about [the E3] media briefings, specifically for those who were expecting to see Nintendo show something about Super Mario or Legend of Zelda," Nintendo president Satoru Iwata told Forbes.

During Nintendo's recent E3 press conference, the company appeared to focus on casual-oriented titles, such as Animal Crossing: City Folk and Wii Sports Resort, and quickly glossed over major hardcore announcements, such as Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars on DS and word that the teams for Mario and Zelda were working on new, unspecified titles.

"If there is any perception that Nintendo is ignoring the core gamers, it's a misunderstanding and we really want to get rid of that misunderstanding by any means," he continued. "The so-called big titles need a long, long development period...we really didn't think this year's E3 media briefing was the time to do so."

Bold means that any chance of seeing a Zelda or another great Mario game on the Wii will be years from now. :-\

doesn't matter, in fact is better that way so nintendo doesn't release every card in a short period of time like microsoft did, the wii has enough games to survive this and early next year, and the DS has even more.

Every Nintendo fan wanted to hear about Nintendo's first-party games and franchises, and the fact that none were shown was a disappointment. That's all he's apologizing for.

Nintendo did shoot themselves in the foot when they released all of their cards in a short period of time as well.

i agree with that i hated them because of that, but there were MANY MANY games they didn't mention that they should have (like fatal frame, fire emblem DS, and captain rainbow)

but as you can see they can release their cards again and make new ones, so they are not quite done yet.

Well we wont be seeing those games this year and will most likely get the first inkling next year. I dont really see what the complaint was, would they have gone ahead and displayed videos of gameplays and such so quickly after the release of Twilight Princess and Galaxy? Sometimes, I think people overeggzagerate their feelings.

The fact that Mario and Zelda games will be here three to four years from now is somehow supposed to change the fact that there is absolutely nothing coming out for the Wii in the foreseeable future? Three or four good games every few years won't cut it Nintendo.

there's games coming out in the near future, the fact that you are not interested in them doesn't mean they aren't

Well, let us look at the rest of the year, for the Wii. We have that snowboarding game they showed during the conference, Wii Music, Wii Sports 2, de Blob, a new Animal Crossing, and Tales of Symphonia 2. Can you really look at that list, and tell me that you are satisfied with the Wii's list of upcoming titles, satisfied with the majority of what is a very small list targeting casual gamers?

Well if Iwata had to apologize for Nintendo's poor E3 showing, and the way he apologizes is telling us that Mario and Zelda will not be appearing in the near future, definitely indicates to us that Nintendo cares about Mario and Zelda. I dont think it shows that we, as people, arent interested in the other stuff Nintendo is offering us in the meantime, however I do think that Nintendo still realizes where their fans hearts lie and is doing all that they can to still provide it to us, no matter how small it may be.

Obviously, none of the stuff coming out is appealing to the crowd interested in these games, for if that were the case, than Iwata wouldnt be apologizing.

well there's still games i have not gotten yet (like new blood and chocobo dungeon) there's also fatal frame being developed, warioland, madworld, the conduit (when it gets a publisher), tomb raider underworld (wii version most likely will have different puzzles like the anniversary one did), castlevania judgement (after konami's press conference it looks ok), rune factory frontier, and there's even a new tales of game exclusive for wii being developed, that and plus what you said and plus what nintendo is doing, IMO is a decent lineup, besides i have other consoles, so if there's a month or so that doesn't have wii games i just play DS or ps3.

Yeah but none of those games listed arent even developed by Nintendo.

The point of Iwata apologizing is that Nintendo is only offering Animal Crossing and PIkmin for this year (early next year), and not adding a variety of anything else. Nintendo really only has what at most 6 games coming?

I agree that that would be a good lineup, if those games were concentrated in the span of about a year, but some will take years to see the light of day (like Warioland, new Zelda, and new Mario which were just announced, and The Conduit which may not make it out at all). Suddenly, even one or two of those games gets delayed, or fails to meet expectations, and you could have a huge gap between good Wii games.

same can be said of the lineup of any other consoles.... and there's the possibility of new games being announced from here to there.

Not really. The PS3 and 360 benefit from a lot of multi-platform games that really thicken their library. The 360, for example, has the following coming out between now and the end of the year: Soulcalibur IV, Tales of Vesperia, Mercenaries 2, Infinite Discovery, Rise of the Argonauts, Viva Pinata 2, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Rock Band 2, GH: World Tour, Far Cry 2, Fallout 3, Fracture, Saints Row 2, Tom Clancy's EndWar, Fable II, Dead Space, Gears of War 2, Left 4 Dead, The Last Remnant, and Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts coming out. That's more than the number hardcore Wii games that have been announced for the next two years, and that is only for half of a year for the 360.
