Is Pokemon....dying out?

I'm starting to sense a wave in today's youth. The death of a long running series. The newest Pokemon game on DS just arrived, referring to the Mystery Dungeons, and nobody really seemed to care. Nobody asked for it, the game stores I know of, didn't even HYPE about it like they used to.

All they care about is Grand Theft Auto 4 and Mario Kart on Wii.

Even when parents come into my store, they tell me that Pokemon related items are being removed from many chain stores. Such as Toys R Us, Wal-Mart, and party supply stores. Saying it's "unpopular".

Could this very well be the death of trend finally?

From my understanding from listening to the children... all the kids care about is DragonBall Z, Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Yu-Gi-Oh (somewhat, just not as much), Bleach, and majorly....Naruto.

I think Naruto killed Pokemon personally, in terms of trendy.

Many tell me, they are glad it's dying out. When it was those same people who probably tapped in loads of hours on the endless versions of colors that were released...Red..Blue..Yellow...Gold...Silver...Crystal...Ruby...Sapphire...Emerald, etc. etc....

Can you hear it? It's the winds of change...Pokemon will be filed under "Cabbage Patch Kids" style of trend probably. It had a great run, but will there be another game to revive it or just put it to the grave, to end up along the lines of likes of the "Power Rangers" is a sad tragedy...
 
The newest Pokemon game is a mystery dungeon hybrid, not a true Pokemon game. That's probably why it's not as hyped.

I had the first Pokemon Mystery Dungeon game. I enjoyed playing as the Pokemon for once, but I ended up never finishing it because of the terrible escort missions. Seriously, I got up to about level 30 or something and then I would have to escort a level 1 Pokemon and the stupid thing would get itself killed. If they didn't have anything like that, I would really consider it again.
 
It wouldn't surprise me if Pokemon is dying out. It's been going for AGES, and i have to say that I lost interest when the thing went into the 4th series (the show was too repetitive), and essentially, the game play is almost the same as every other, just with different stories, characters and crud like that.

I don't mind the old Pokemon stuff, but there's no power in the world that would take me near the newer stuff... which makes me kinda happy that it's finally hitting in the last innings... You can only push a old idea so far before it topples ovr the edge. Soon, it will be with all the others, and Yu-Gi-Oh, as you mentioned, will likely be the next fad to die... DBZ though... I think that's goin' to keep going some how... at least for another 3 years. Yu-Gi-Oh, i reckon year and half to two years.

Yeah, that's another problem with the main Pokemon games. They really haven't done anything to change the core gameplay since it first came out. If they really want to keep it going, they need to come up with something fresh. Or, make it into an MMO. :D
 
i actually liked the first pokemon mystery dungeon.... however this one came out near the release date of a bunch of other games and i don' have the money to buy it right now
 
It's not dying out. Diamond and Pearl just got done selling what, 15 million copies. Also, I think Pokemon merchandise is becoming exclusive to one or two stores.

@Mai, the second Mystery Dungeon games are more focused on exploration than escorts.
 
DBZ has been pushing the limit the past year. All the new games, are the older games with an extra 2 or three levels. The olny one I even play is Tenkaichi 2, and even on that one I mostly just do 2 player. It reminds me of brawl in a strange way....
 
I actually did a bit of a double-take when I first saw this title because I couldn't believe my eyes. Diamond and Pearl are approaching 10 million in combined sales right now and Pokemon is unfathomably far from dying out. The newest Pokemon game was a spinoff, not an RPG and Pokemon spinoffs never sell really well, but the main games in the franchise are still selling incredibly well.
 
Pokemon: Gotta kill 'em all!

I never got caught up in the Pokemon craze. So I won't mourn it's demise. Besides, how many versions of the same game will they come up with before the bottom falls out?
 
The Mystery Dungeon games were never that popular to begin with, so you can't base it's popularity on a spin-off series imho.
 
well... technically... Pokemon had it's ups and downs. After the Pokemone Blue, Red, and yellow games came out... it dipped for at least a year. Even though other releases were planned...etc...

I saw popularity drop drastically.

I believe it will be back if it is even dropping now. The games are actualyl well made... even though older people do not want to be caught playing it... I know many that enjoy Pokemon and will buy it again and again.

Really? I may just pick it up then. The escort missions were really the only thing I didn't enjoy about the first Mystery Dungeon games.
 
id say that when the next diamond/pearl type game comes out the hype will be back at normal levels. hopefully they add some new life to the franchise though.

I'd say Diamond and Pearl did a pretty good job of sticking with what works, while changing some things, like the Physical/Special split, and reviewers commended it for holding up ten years later.
 
Also, it's still the second highest selling series, and the highest selling RPG. It won't lose that spot for a long, long time.
 
Well actually Mystery Dungeon seems to have done quite well here as equally as the first ones, apparently my stores had massive preorders for the title and people still buying it. I think it is a fantastic series, Pokemon cant ever die out, and Mystery Dungeon 3 is bound to make a return hopefully to this world.
 
I hope you don't mean dying out, because series that are dying out to you include things like Castlevania, and I don't think dying out series sell 14.18 million copies in eight months.
