Blu-Ray for the 360?

Except for the sole right to manufacture and produce the media format that will be the next standard for 10 years.
 
Technically, I think Blu-ray winning is bad for both Nintendo and Microsoft and to some extent, the consumer. For Nintendo and Microsoft, they are either going to have to pay Sony for the rights to use Blu-ray on their next consoles, or come up with their own proprietary format. Either option is bound to cost, though, and it will be reflected in the prices they charge for the consoles and the games.
 
i don't want in the future some wii 2/ps4/XBOX"insert probable number here" is too expensive thread :lol
 
Well, if everyone ends up using Blu-ray, Nintendo and Microsoft will have to pay Sony licensing fees. To make up for that cost, they might have to charge more on their consoles (I mean more than they would have to if everyone was still using DVD).

If instead, Nintendo and Microsoft try to go the propietary way, they have to put money into research and development, and probably more money on top of that to actually produce that format. Which also would lead to higher costs. Obviously, each generation will cost more just because of newer technology, but having to pay licensing fees on top of that, or having to fund r&d, won't make it any cheaper.
 
If Blu-ray does win the format war, we're going to be seeing some jumps in PS3 sales. The add-on will be great for everyone that already has a 360, but the ones that don't are going to go for the PS3 as I'm pretty sure it's still the cheapest Blu-ray player out there and the fact that you can play video games on itas well helps.

Uh oh . Looking for trouble supporting the PS3 on this site. :lol

But no, you're right. The PS3 is one of the cheapest Blu Ray players, and since you can turn it into a computer too and run Linux on it, it's also a very cheap computer. :p
 
Its pretty down to which one you want. If you don't have a 360 or PS3 and want Blu-ray it'll cost you more for the 360 Elite with the Add-on (which many believe to be from $200-$250), whilst it'll be cheaper to purchase a 40GB PS3 for half of that.
 
really... there isn't much difference between Blu-ray and HD DVD IMO...

BUT... since Blu-Ray won, is Microsoft going to be offering a Blu-Ray player?

What about those customers who bought a HD DVD player... are they going to get a discount?

TO Keep the Xbox 360 price competetive ... they will have to offer the console eventually w/ built in Blu-Ray... but I can't see Microsoft keeping the price down enough...

1) Officially, no.

2) Not a chance. Buyer beware, let betamax be a lesson to ye.

3) I don't think they need to offer built in blu-ray. But they are planning to make a price drop pretty soon. EGA Podcast speculation says these two occurences may be related.
 
Eh, if Nintendo and Microsoft do bow to a competitor for technology, it won't be a huge deal. There are laws governing licensing agreements. A Blu-ray equipped 360 won't instantly jump $100 because of the technology. That's an invitation for an antitrust suit that Sony will not win.

So all is well in the world of gaming. That is until the patent-suit goes to trial on the electrical diodes on the Blu-ray player. :lol
