AR Cards for the 3DS. What the heck are these things?

* Nintendo 3DS system
* Nintendo 3DS charging cradle
* Nintendo 3DS AC adapter
* Nintendo 3DS stylus
* SD Memory Card (2GB)
* 6 AR Card(s) (view the cards using the outer cameras to play supported AR games)
* Quick-Start Guide
* Operations Manual (including warranty)

^ this is what comes with the 3DS. The big question is the cards are scanned via the camera. Almost like the E-Cards from the GBA days from my understanding. Can anyone shed some light on this?
