About downloading games...

I honestly dont see what the big deal is. They know that some of their games appeal to younger kids. I mean I have a niece and nephew and I dont want them messing up my system. I dont see how this gives them a kiddy image. Now if the games that they develop stay on the kiddy side then yes that will change my view. But again I dont see the big deal right now.

Wow, you were right. They just lost a lot points to the public's general view of them being mature. They are mature, but they don't show it as well as the other consoles.

Of course I'm right. :P I do my research and I do it well.

I think Nintendo knows the value of keeping mature gamers interested. While they may have designed the console to be five-year-old and idiot proof, the games will probably take a completely different direction than the kiddie route. The initial lineup of games will more than likely be geared to children (because of the constant "Mommy I want, I want NOW." factor), but after the initial "It's new, buy it!" phase dies down a bit, some good games will probably follow. The gamecube launch titles weren't all that appealing afterall.

Well, Super Smash Brothers Melee (not exactly a launch title but it came out like a week after the console) is one of the most popular games of all time.

I loved Melee (and stll do). I stayed home and played in for 14 hours straight when I first bought it :P But it's not exactly one of those *wide eyed with excitement/awe* type of games that makes you drool just to look at. The launch games may be good, but they more than likely won't inspire the drool/desire factor in most mature gamers.

It shows they're making their next console with younger kids in mind. I don't see the PS3 scaling back its technology because most 8 year olds don't have $450 in their pockets...

Honestly, even if that was Nintendo's reasoning, why would they say that to the press? If they're trying to steer away from the kiddie image then making key choices about their next console based on what a 5 year old can and can not break is a bad way to do it.

Because it has nothing to do with the games they develop. At least not at this point. Like I said, right now all they did was make it a lot more durable. Thats it. You're right they are making it with younger kids in mind, but it doesnt necessarily mean that thats what the console is going to be about. I think you're over anylizing a tad.

It just shows a consistency with the mentality of Nintendo. I know they aim to appeal to a younger audience, and I was just saying that this is yet another piece of evidence to support that belief.

I'm just saying that based on past tendencies, and the fact that they are making the hardware specific for younger audiences, isn't it rational to say that they're probably going to make the software specific for younger audiences too?

It is and I see where you're coming from but its not specifically for younger children. They just have them in mind. Once I see the line up of games and if that consists with the kiddy then ill change my mind. But as of now, its still early to tell.

Having your console fall off of a 3 foot shelf can break a PS2. GC would be durable enough to withstand the shock. Xbox made a second connector to its controller wires, so should someone trip over the wires, the second connector would pop out, instead of dragging down the system to fall and break.

**** happens, and my friend would have went through 5 PS2's had he gotten one. My friend's little brother goes nuts when he gets mad at a game. He pounded the top of the GC enough to de-calibrate the lens.

You should see the kid, if we play Halo with him, he starts losing it whenever he dies. It's actually funny sometimes, because he'll say things like "this game sucks" or "I hate this game", even though we know its a lie.

Unfortuantly, one of my friends' Xbox controllers is partially damaged with the conncetor most likely due to the little guy. Sometimes the Xbox doesn't recognize that the controller is there. Very annoying in Halo, because the message clouds up the screen. Other games make it stop entirely.

Ya, my GC died after about 4 years. I never dropped it, hit it, kept it on the floor, any of that, and it died. So I don't know what this really has to do with anything...

... but if it was about the durability of Nintendo consoles vs. their competitors, then personal experience has taught me otherwise.

I just think you had bad luck with your GC. Ive had mine longer and is still running like a champ. Both my PS2 and my xbox have giving me problems within the first year of owning them.

Sorry to hear that.

Generally if a system had something wrong with it, it would happen within the 1st year. I'm surprised your's lasted 4 years and then quit. I remember your posts about your problems with it.

Sorry to hear that.

Don't be, I never played it anyway. All the games I owned I either beat a hundred times or made the mistake of buying them. I wasn't even really mad when it quit working, I just felt kind of ripped off that despite my taking care of it, it still broke.

I'm just saying, GC's can break down just like Xbox's and PS2's can.

i have had my GCN since launch and it never had any problems

PS2's on the other had had disk read errors after about 2-4 years use

Although he has multiple duplicates and custom hacks of games, this is the size of my friend's NES rom folder.
nesroms1nm.png

WAY too many duplicates, let's put it that way. I couldn't tell you how many of those are from Nintendo and not other companies, but I still don't think it's possible to get every NES, SNES, and N64 game in 512MB memory.

he has 2.42 gig full?

just for NES games? That seems way too large of a file size... no?

Bv :hat
Probably not. My brother has an emulator and has separate files based on region of release because it would take way too long if it were one file to open. I'll ask him how many gigs the files are. And that's just for the NES games.

I really doubt he has THAT many games on it....unless he has a whole lot of duplicates. Cause, seriously, the average capacity of an NES game is

The NES cart can hold from 64KB to 512KB

http://darkwatcher.psxfanatics.com/console/cartridges.htm (under the third generation)

Doing some math (I may be totally wrong) that would mean he has exactly 4956.16 games with a capacity of 512 KB each.

My math: I converted 512 KB into bytes (524288=y)
I then converted 2.42 GB into bytes (2598455214.08=x) Then I took x/y and got 4956.16.

Am I a total freaking moron, or did I do this right? I know I took the longcuts in my math, but it should have worked...rigth?
