What should I do

Ok...  I was happy when my 360 kicked the bucket.  But now my PS3 died.  It stopped reading discs.  I called the tech support, and they went through a few things with me to try to remedy the problem.  They concluded I have to send it in.

I don't have the reciept.  I'm almost positive I bought it 1/20/08, but I have no proof of that.  (I remember certain dates for some strange reason.)

So...

1. I somehow come up with $150 and send this one in and get a refurbed one
2. Pitch it and buy a new one
3. Smash it with a sledgehammer and never buy another PS3 or any other Sony product (I've hated Sony for years, why stop now?).

I'm honestly really leaning towards #3, convince me to attempt the other two options...

If you bought it 1 20 2008 isnt the warrenty from Sony for 1 year!? Theyd just have to scan your upc code like Nintendo does, I never had to show them m receipt.

That's not Sony's policy, I got a long speech about that. If you don't show them a proof of purchase (a reciept or bank statement, but I apparantly paid cash for it because it's not in my records) they will void the warranty.

Oh. I always follow the policy of once buying something throw the receipt into the box and pack it all away. Thanks for the headup on Sony policy, I will keep my receipts for them. I hope you get it worked out though.

They can't track it by the serial number? I thought that's what serial numbers were for. :-\

I'd say 3 but I'm not a big Sony fan either, so don't listen to me. Especially since you have games for the PS3. Unless you're never going to play them again, I'd go with option 1.

i'd say number 1.... smashing a ps3 with a hammer is not nice >_> and maybe later on you might have the temptation of buying a new one and regret this decision

It's not like I really have to big an investment into it, I only have 4 games. Sony has got the worst policys out of the 3. I've had Nintendo replace an SP without a reciept or anything, and Microsoft used my serial number to track when I purchased my 360 for when I sent it in on Monday.

Microsoft has the worst policy to be technical..if it's not RROD, you have to pay for it to be fixed I believe. But I digress, just give them your serial number. I could have sworn that would work.

I did give them the serial number, but the person said that that didn't matter, that the policy was that the reciept was required.

Hi All

Be patient,in my opinion and experience PS3's for the most part are ok.What happened to you was just a fluke.Send it to the manufacturer's,Sony is a HUGE outfit, there's a strong chance they will give you a new one just so they can get it out of their hair. The downside is you might have to wait a while for them to reply.

#3 sounds like a winner! lol
But really without a receipt or like as KAZ said a "just give 'em one to shut up" miracle you might be out of luck. You can try contacting the store you bought it from and see if they track inventory throughput based on serial number, and they may be able to provide you with a receipt since you know the date, but it's pretty unlikely unless you went through Gamestop or something

Yeah I would definitely try contacting the store you bought it at if you remember where you bought it. They should have a record of it, I believe things called "laws" require them too. Whether or not they are willing to look back that far and find out is another story.

Also, you might be able to get it fixed locally for cheaper. If you know any Ma and Pa outfits that sell videogames, it would be worth asking. I know Mega's shop has a repair bay (run by him I believe), maybe that's an option for you.

Tough break either way though. That really sucks. If its gonna cost you $150 to fix it... might be worth it to sell/trade the games and just be done with it.

Yep, that's your best bet right there.
