Top 10 most anticipated games of 2011 (released and to-be-released)

From what I have dubbed the year of the gamer it was really difficult choosing the order these games went in.

I have decided these games are all equal and subject to my mind changing…constantly.

So here’s what I have come up with, no doubt the list will be similar to others so let’s see what I have come up with personally!

10. Rage

Rage is a first-person shooter in development by id Software (the wonderful guys who brought us all things Doom, give them a round of applauses).

The game is set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland created by an asteroid impact, based on the real life asteroid Apophis, which is on track to pass near Earth in 2036. In Rage's story, the asteroid hits, and the few pockets of survivors are forced to start a new civilization.

The world is populated by human survivors of the impact, who have come together to form settlements around oases and other practical or habitable locations. These fragile homes are diligently defended by the inhabitants against bandits and mutants, which have organization of their own. Bandits and mutants serve as the player's main enemies for much of the game, although id Software has hinted at some sort of significant change around the halfway point in the storyline.

Apparently this environment is perfectly suited to the rough-and-tumble dune buggy racing seen in games like MotorStorm, as that sort of gameplay will be an important feature of Rage. Players will have the ability to augment their cars with various items and upgrades they can gain by completing races, but the game is not specifically a racing title as it keeps the first person shooter true to its core.

Set for release in September 2011, no doubt this will become another hit for the Doom creators!

9. Dead Space 2

Dead Space 2 is an upcoming survival horror third-person shooter video game developed by Visceral Games and published by Electronic Arts for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows.

The game proves to us when science fiction and horror are mixed together the right way, the end result is the most horrific, somewhat terrifying game to ever be released. Big statement I know!

The game that takes place in 2511, three years after the events of Dead Space and Dead Space: Aftermath, on the Sprawl, a densely populated metropolis built on a shard of Titan, a moon of Saturn. The mental illness caused by the Marker appears to be permanent and continues to have an effect on the protagonist Isaac Clarke. The government will continue to have a place in the storyline. The game will begin in a hospital aboard the Sprawl. Players will witness the horror of the Necromorph infection as it begins in the station.

Dead Space 2 is building its fan base all due to the sick trailers and screenshots released so far. This has also helped it to be one of the most anticipated games of 2011.

8. Marvel vs. Capcom 3

I will admit the fact that I stink at Marvel vs. Capcom. To the point that I find myself with mixed feelings about adding this game to this list!

I am certainly not anticipating another beat down by some Asian teenager again that’s for sure.

Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is a fighting game where up to two players compete in battle using characters with their own unique fighting styles and special attacks. The game features the same tag-based team feature as previous instalments of the series, where each player chooses three characters that can be swapped at any point during a match, and utilizes an order selection called "Evolved Vs. Fighting System", a modified version of earlier systems seen in other Marvel vs. Capcom and SNK vs. Capcom games. It is the first game in the franchise to feature three-dimensional character models as opposed to two-dimensional sprites, though gameplay remains restricted to two-dimensions, allowing characters to move only backward, forward, or straight up into the air.

Super popular, better than Tekken in my opinion so this deserves a mention in the list.

7. Warhammer 40,000: Space Marines

There’s just something about a 3rd Person action game that gets the juices flowing and I know I’m not alone with this. I hope.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine (also known as WH40k: Space Marine) is an upcoming third-person action video game developed by Relic Entertainment and published by THQ. It is scheduled to be released for Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360and PlayStation 3.

Players take the role of Captain Titus, a Space Marine and humanity's last hope for survival in a dark future that knows only war. An ork invasion of an Imperial Forge World; an entire planet covered by factories, responsible for producing weapons and armour for the Imperium of Man. The plot is further revealed that the War Boss leading the ork invasion is attempting to steal and salvage a Warlord class Battle Titan (a walking tank hundreds of feet tall), and Captain Titus (the player character) of the Ultramarines Chapter is sent, along with his Company of Space Marines and Imperial Guard, to prevent the War Boss from getting his hands on it.

A bold move into the world of 3rd person gaming and it looks like this baby is on track to entertain us all!

6. Brink

Get ready for a whole lot of “wow” factor with the latest offering from Splash Damage.

Brink is a first-person shooter built around a story mode playable online with up to 8 players in a co-operative style, against bots, or in competitive team-against-team multi-player. You will play as a fully customizable character. Custom characters can be created with gear bought with experience points earned by completing objectives. All custom clothing items are purely cosmetic.

Brink also features Splash Damage's SMART ("Smooth Movement Across Random Terrain") System. It allows players to manoeuvre around complex environments without equally complex input by analysing their position and judging what they are trying to do. The movement style is that of parkour, similar to that as seen in the Mirror's Edge game.

The game features four class types, each with different traits and abilities, designed to promote teamwork.

While in gameplay, both multiplayer and campaign, the player can bring up a "wheel" of sorts providing various objectives to fulfil. Each of these objectives gives a specific amount of experience. The available missions are produced by the Squad Commander system based upon the player's specific position on the map, his relative skill, current progress in the overall mission, and a wide variety of factors.

Looking back we have Bethesda + id Tech 4 engine +Splash Damage + it’s so darn obvious this had to make the top ten.

5. Bulletstorm

Outrageous weapons, kills and, yes, even swearing aside - it isn’t too difficult to see why there is so much excitement swirling around Bulletstorm. Primarily, it would have to do with the fact that it’s an Epic game that has absolutely nothing to do with Gears of War or Unreal Tournament. And coming off the critical success of the iTouch hit Infinity Blade, there is little reason to suspect why Bulletstorm would serve to kill the almost epic amount of momentum that the studios currently has. Then again, perhaps it’s the fact that those excited for Bulletstorm, who just so happen purchase the Epic Edition, will get their hands on a bit of early access for Gears of War 3 – not that I’m judging any of you out there. Did I mention it’s EPIC!

4. Gears of War 3

Hell, yeah! Of course Xbox is bringing this baby back! It rocks my jocks and makes them money so why not! Not to mention the developing that has gone into this badboy no doubt will translate to more gunning down ugly ground people and multiplayer nights that should be spent with the lady. Sorry baby!

Seriously though, this game is totally off the charts. You’ll be presented with new characters and, as you progress, new weapons. If you ever played Gears of War 2, get prepared for the Grenade, the Digger Launcher (hey, I don’t know what are they supposed to do exactly but they sound cool) and many, many others.

Oh and lovely guys who hate your guts.

3. Mortal Kombat 9

So when you hear Warner Bros are bringing back a timeless classic you tend to cringe a little and hope they aren’t talking about a classic film.

Thankfully in this case their talking video games, something they have been able to master in recent times. Throw in the fact we are talking about Mortal Kombat and it is clear why this made the list.

Mortal Kombat 9 has exceeded all expectations so far and no doubt deserves it spot in the list. Don’t believe me? Go check it out at youtube.com/LoyalGeekTube and watch Noob Saibot throwdown!

Get over here!

2. Crysis 2

Crysis 2 comes and destroys the concrete jungle where dreams are made from with this massive sequel to what has formerly the PC benchmark game for several years.

So we have the year 2023, New York, nano-tech… do I need to say more? Oh, and DirectX 11. Better plan for a new graphics card PC gamers.

The action this time is around New York and yeah, you’ll be able to destroy the entire city mua-ha-ha-ha! If it was “Nomad” in Crysis 1, now it is “Alcatraz” that’s the main unit.

1. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Skyrim is set two hundred years after the events of Oblivion, in the eponymous land of Skyrim. The province has erupted into civil war after the assassination of its king. Concurrently, the god Alduin, who takes the form of a massive dragon, has arisen to destroy the world. The player character is the last living Dovahkiin (Dragonborn), and must fend off Alduin and save Skyrim from destruction.

I know this is a contentious pick for number one and several games that didn’t make the list probably should of.

That is why I encourage all the loyal geeks to give me there top 10 list.

Mass Effect 3 should be up there, maybe #2 after Skyrim. I haven't even heard of some of the others. And no 3DS games? Even though it's a remake, Ocarina of Time is literally going to be a system seller.

I'd definitely add those two in somewhere. Maybe other members will have some ideas on placement.
