Dow Jones cornered Best Buy's CFO at an investor conference and asked if he'd comment on speculation the retailer might buy GameStop. Ryan Robinson declined to do so, but said some things that still keep the subject alive.

"What I think is something that we've missed in the industry and is something other participants have been doing is the proportion of business that is used," Robinson told DJ Newswires. "We've not developed the capability to the extent that other participants have. It's a very margin-rich portion, so I think there's opportunity in that business."

This is all in response to the site Bloggingstocks.com, which speculated on Tuesday that GameStop could be an acquisition target. Of course, it might also cost north of $4 billion to do that, which is dough Best Buy doesn't have. Leveraging the deal or doing a stock swap then commits Best Buy to the bricks-and-mortar game retail business for the long term, and Robinson noted the industry's shift toward digital distribution. He also pointed out the company's test of in-store kiosks that buy back used games.

:( I'm scared.

Hopefully GameStop execs would say words like "No" and/or "stop calling" and other words like that. But the cool thing is it will see if GameStop is in it for their customers or a fast buck.

I think its too late to jump on Gamestop. The Digital Frontier will kill Gamestop in a year or two.

nah, that's too early. It will happen eventually, but not in a year or two. Our internet infrastructure is horribly outdated and any upgrades are slowly rolling out. Sure it will kill traditional Redbook music CD's and DVD's, but video games are still too big to download. Especially those 50GB PS3 games. I can tell you right now, it will take me more than a day to download that at my current internet speed.

As far as Best Buy buying GameStop, don't think it will happen. GameStop is quite big at the moment to just gobble up.

Not to mention bandwidth limitations -- if I were to download just five 50gb PS3 games, I'd be over the monthly limit for Comcast and they'd shut down my Internet for a year. :(

That's the reason I don't give cable companies my money and sticking to DSL. In no way will I support caps on my internet.

Is all cable internet like that? Guess I'll just stick with my DSL if so because I download a ton of stuff.

I don't think I have that limit here... although I'm not entirely sure.

BUT... digital distribution MUST be a big force on the horizon. If it makes Best Buy think twice... I wonder what the outcome of all used / new brick and mortar gaming stores will be. I know many stores are having hard times...

The Cable Companies seem to be the ones pushing it the most. It's already rolled out in many areas. Time Warner is the biggest offender. When customers, and essentially most of the internet, complained, Time Warner decided not to upgrade their infrastructure. Screw them.
