Battery Life Revealed
Sony talks specifics on battery life for the PSP.

October 27, 2004 - This is it. The one piece of information we've all been waiting for. Sony Computer Entertainment has at last managed to mention the word "battery" with regards to the PSP and follow that up with solid numbers.

In the words of the company, "PSP features an integrated high output lithium-ion battery that provides a play time of between 4 and 6 hours for game titles and continuous 4 to 5 hours for video viewing." These numbers, according to SCE, were determined with the system's luminance set to maximum (180 cd/m2) and minimum (80 cd/m2), volume set to half the maximum level, headphones used instead of speakers and wireless LAN not in use (note that the maximum luminance value rises to 200 cd/m2 when playing through AC power).
While SCE did not provide details on how much of a hit LAN play would bring about, it's good to at last have an idea of how long we'll be able to play games and watch movies on the PSP. Plus, extra batteries cost just about $45, so doubling the available time (if you're willing to carry a spare with you) could be an legitimate option.

All that's left now is to get the system in our hands and start checking these numbers out for ourselves. With PSP now launching to Japan on 12/12, the wait won't be too long (if you plan on importing, as we do).

It seems that Sony got its act together on the PSP.

also, it depends on how good the Lithium Ion battery is. The more you charge them... the less life they will have (and you will have to replace in the future).

4-6 hours is not too bad, but we'll see if its actually that. You will see degradation to the usage time after a few charges.

Well, the stats they released are based on people having the screen at full brightness, but with sound at half going through the headphones and no LAN (which I hear is a big drain on battery life).

What will the time be if you have the sound through the speakers, using wireless and playing a game that requires frequent streaming off the disc?

I'd be slightly cautious about what they say. If the battery lasted a decent amount before, why didn't they just tell people?

Jeepin.... its still does it for Lithium Ion.... Nickel Cadmium (spelling?) was really bad. It formed a "memory." If you were to not drain it all the way down, it would form "like" a memory... and not give you the part of your battery back that you did not drain down. ITs almost like the battery forgot it was there.

Lithium Ion..... is not prone to this... BUT if you keep the battery on the charger (without draining the battery to about 9-10% and then recharging) you can ruin the batteries.... giving them a shorter lifespan. Trust me, its happened to a lot of our laptop batteries here. Lithium Ion batteries ARE EXPENSIVE too.
It would cost us $140-170 PER BATTERY for our laptops. While I doubt the PSP's is that expensive, I am thinking between $40-80 for a PSP battery... maybe.

As for Beanie's comments... I missed that. That is based on "screen at full brightness, but with sound at half going through the headphones and no LAN (which I hear is a big drain on battery life)."

Yes, I know for 100% positive, Turning on the LAN will cut your battery life per change in half. At least it does for laptops. My IBM Laptop's battery lasts 7-8 hours without bluetooth and wireless lan off. Turn them both on and you get 2 hrs 30 min to 3 hrs 15 min life time on that battery per charge.

ahh I see...I could never keep that battery stuff straight :p

The deal with the screen brightness, sound and LAN being at certain levels in order to get decent battery life is a real bite in the shorts if you ask me.

we'll see how it is when its finally launched :)

It would be funny to see an instruction sheet that comes with the PSP stating:
"to get optimum battery life, you need to dim the screen to 50%, have the volume at 65%, and turn off the wirless lan. Remember, moving the joystick will drain more of the battery."

Not that I want to be the first to point it out, but isn't it interesting that Nintendo has stated the DS to run 6-10 and they didn't list it as having been tested under certain conditions? The SP was stated to run between 10-15 hours depending on the how often you had the light on, and I found that 10 hours with the light on was pretty accurate.

Ouch. 2-4 hours battery life with that stuff on? I hope the PSP isn't the same.

basically 2-3 hours :lol
yeah... and that is actually good battery time on an extended Lithium Ion battery .

I think I get about 12-15 hours off my SP before recharging... I think.
I know I can go up to 1 month without recharging it.

You're only getting 4-5 hours? That's pretty low. Mine averages over 10 hours. I let it charge all the way each time it runs out though.

What did you do when you first got it? The SPs start out about half charged. The best thing to do is to either:

1) Charge all the way before you even play it.
2) Play it until it totally runs out, and then charge it fully.

Supposedly, if you do it any other way, the battery's memory gets messed up and thinks that it can only work for a few hours.

sort-of.... Lithium Ion batteries are better though..... what you are stating is Nickel Cadmium (spelling?)
Lithium Ion batteries can get ruined if you do not charge them all the way up and let them run down... making the battery life short and having to replace them sooner, BUT you should get the same charge every time (although in Lithium Ion there is a small amount of energy decay.... that is in all batteries).

Lets just say I played the SP 4-5 hours straight 1 night in the hospital when our last kid was born. Then the next day there I played another 2-3, and the following day 2-3. And then I played it again the next day (4 days in arow) for 1-2 hours. The red light was on after that. The backlight was on MOST of the time.

Without the backlight on... you get some serious battery life.

Yeah, Nintendo said 10-15, with 10 being the max if you keep the light on and 15 being the max without it on. But I've definitely gone more than 10 hours with the light on. I'd say that 12-17 hours is probably more accurate.

same here...

I get more than 10 hours with the light on as well.
