last night we were playin halo system link with a bunch of 360s. someone turned off a lamp that was plugged into the same outlet as my 360, and i got the three rings of death. i literally almost broke down into tears. but after i turned it off and turned it back on, it worked perfectly, and hasnt acted up since.
 
Could've been a short that was read as a malfunction by your 360. If it's fine now, just make sure you don't do that again. :lol
 
It probably was an older lamp? Like Strubes said, it probably just caused a short in the outlet and the 360 read the situation wrong.
