Official Action/Adventure Gaming Thread!

Segatron Genesis... call me the wizard.
I'm making this thread, because there's too many RPG ones and I like talking about them! :P

What's your favorite thing about Action/Adventure games?

The guns? the missions? the "Collect" everything? I want to know FULL details people!

I'm talking games like...classic CastleVania, Contra, Metal Gear, Pyschonauts, Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Max Payne, Donkey Kong Country series, Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie, Jet Force Gemini, Pitfall, No More Heroes, Ninja Gaiden, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Dead Rising, LittleBigPlanet, Grand Theft Auto, etc. etc. etc.

Spill the beans and keep this alive!

Favorite action games are, Ninja Gaiden {xbox}, God of War, RE4, Castlevania 64, and the entire MGS series. Favorite adventure games are, OOT, MM, WindWaker, Metroid {GC}, GTA3/VC, Shadowman, Shadow of Colossus, and Okami. I guess opinions vary, but I always classified Banjo Kazooie/Tooie and DK64 as "Platformers" such as Mario 64.

And why is that X2? What do you want to focus on when you play an Action/Adventure game.

@Mai, the whole concept of killing things, does it help the enjoyment of the game or in some way improve it?

Well here's a few of the games in that genre I like.

Castlevania, Zelda, No More Heroes, Tomb Raider, God of War, and Metroid, for example.

I don't really think there's many games outside of puzzle, sports, and racing where you don't kill stuff. It is just that most action/adventure games in particular seem to feature bosses that require some strategy to beat. Especially Metroid and Zelda. Part of the fun is figuring out how to do it.

I concur, figuring out the patterns to defeat the bosses still carries on to this day with these particular game's sequels.

Ratchet & Clank series is a good example of how well these continue.

Before those days, Action/Adventure titles like METROID were like that.

@X2, Mario is still considered an Adventure game imho, especially Mario 64.

I don't really see how it is an adventure game, though. The main point of the game was to either run, jump, or fly from one platform to another to collect items, that was it. Whereas a game like Metroid or Zelda you actually GO on an adventure and there is a story behind it. Not sure if that makes sense, but that's how I see it :)

It makes sense X2.

Yet, don't you run, jump, or sometimes drive in games like Tomb Raider and Uncharted? Does that make them a platformer?

What I'm saying, before we used classifications like "Platformer". We had to call them Action/Adventure.

Well yes, lots of games have platforming elements, but they don't revolve around platforming such as in Mario. And I do agree that Mario has adventure elements, but I personally could never call it anything other than a Platformer. I guess we will just have to agree to disagree on this one. BTW, I am curious, what games would you consider Platformers? Something like Bubble Bobble?

Well I agree what you say X2, but Bubble Bobble would be Arcade Platformer.

And I agree to agree on this one.

RPG's are just down right fantastic. They're a game that bring in a new world, with it's own story to tell and characters to meet; unravelling plots and twists that you walk in and out of; new challenges that await sometimes in unexpected places and ways. Some might pick up an RPG and toss it aside later because they find it's dull because sometimes it takes forever to get from one point to another, but that's one of those things that makes an RPG great; the fact that sometimes it takes a lot of patients to get from point A to B, but most the time that's just great playability, meaning you're getting much more game time from it than most other games. I pity the soul who can't find an RPG they can immerse themselves within.

What was I on?
