Nintendo Goodness

Sounds like Nintendo had a very strong opening conference. The article was in point form, so please read the whole thing if some of these quotes don't make sense. I'm sure everyone will anyway.

http://cube.ign.com/articles/615/615089p1.html?reload=true

Highlights:

Says Nintendo didn't invent the concept of online gaming. But they intend to reinvent it... "Users won't face monthly gameplay bills." Reggie says Nintendo is working to overcome the current "macho style of online games."

Reggie shows the Game Boy Micro. Says "I know you haven't seen this. It's a hair bigger and two-thirds the weight of an iPod Mini." It's not new technology, but a new look and has the "best and brightest screen ever in a handheld."

Iwata takes tage. Introduces Revolution. Holds up the tiny, Mac Mini-sized unit. Crowd cheers. Says it's the smallest console Nintendo has ever manufactured. Says the final machine will be even smaller than the concept unit he's holding.

BV's going to soil his pants when he hears this:

Iwata then talks about backward compatibility. "Redefining term of backward compatability." It's a virtual console, able to download 20 years of Nintendo content. You will be able to Download NES, Super NES and N64 games. You can get every Nintendo game ever made.

Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness. It's a full-fledged RPG with a dark and sinister plot.

Biggest announcement of the whole conference:

Smash Bros. will be launch game -- wifi.

Very impressive indeed.

Wow, (ive been saying that a lot) :p. Nintendo definitly knows they are playing catch up. This next generation of consoles wont dissapoint.

OMG swgbshsrainusvsuivs

Take that and triple it for me. They really know what they're up to.

20 years of backwards compatibility. That's almost disbleieveable. However, it does double as a "war against roms and emulators" (I have a SNES one myself).

Smash Bros. will be launch game -- wifi.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

Serioulsy, I wonder if this will top Halo 2. SSB series is quite popular, but isn't as well known. If Nintendo can get enough "followers" than the other 2 are going to be in a run for their money.

stealth.... This is craziness... they actually did listen. Instead of adding ports for all the games (from previous systems) they made it all downloadable.

crap though... what is this going to do to 2nd hand game sales? :-\
You see... The PS3 at least has a way that older games can be sold. But if all the NES, SNES, N64...etc.. are available for download... why would people want to buy the original? Besides collecting of course. This is awesome, but it can be a bad thing as well.

Right now... the Revolution is the most believable system out there. The Ps3 seems to far fetched to be out next year. The Xbox 360... is a little far fetched too with 3 processors.... but I believe they will do it. Microsoft lost a lot of money on the Xbox console, and it seems that they are going to follow suit with the 360..... and we all know Microsoft will do it (if history follows suit).

And I really think the power will contend with the other systems.

Ok... now that I can calm down.

While I still find this uber exciting, I can see a couple probs heading our way. Instead of having the usual, "Insert PS1 disk and have fun playing it on your PS2", we will more than likely have to pay to be able to download them. This is good and bad, we can play games we don't even own, but will we be allowed to download games for free we already do own? None the less, this is really quite amazing, and it has restored a lot of faith in Nintendo for me.

The new Pokemon game... I'm wanting it. I'm not going to lie I loved the first two game, Red and Blue, and if they really make it dark, I'm all over it.

As for online Melle... give...

Honestly, from a retailer Point of view..... I want people to pay for the online downloads.
whether it be $1 per game (unlimited D/L's after the payment)

from a user standpoint..... I would want them free.

I know there is a conflict of interest, but my business side wins out on this one.

I'd have to disagree (big surprise). We still really don't know anything about the system. We haven't seen any games running on it, any videos, hell, we don't even know what the controllers are going to be! If anything the most "believable" system is the Xbox 360, because we've seen all of it and seen games running on it.

Of course, I've also seen games running on PS3 (Gears of War, I-8, Killzone) so I definitely "believe" Sony will come through. The Revolution (though promising) still isn't really "revolutionizing" anything. If Nintendo would stop being so darn secretive maybe I could actually get hyped for their new system.

Smash Brothers as Wi-Fi will be excellent thing to add to a system. I have always enjoyed bright gaming screens. The oly problem that will be invoked upon the Micro is that the brighter it is the more difficult it is to see when playing the game outside the building or interior.

Blue, I bet there will be plenty of business available to ya. I HIGHLY doubt Nintendo could make EVERY SINGLE Nintendo, Super Nintendo and N64 game available for download. They'll probably just hit on the biggest and most popular...and slowly at that.

Now to comment on the rest of that article...OOOOOHHHH...me likey!

Very. What if the y do soemthing, and the next Melee will be a bomb and ruined! WRRRYYYYYYY

The chances of the next SSB game of bombing are probably only slightly higher than that of FF XII. Which is very doubtful if that will bomb.

HAL labs is a good company. Trust them.

Personally I don't think the downloading of older games will affect second hand sales very much. The people who grew up with the NES, SNes and so on will want the consoles that they had in their youth. The younger kids who have never played the older games and have only heard of them will probably have zero interest in buying the older consoles.
When I go out and buy the Revolution, I will download the old games, but chances are I'll end up playing them on the original consoles because that is what I am used to. My son will most likely play them on the Revolution.
And as far as the hype, being secretive about the system can have the same impact on a person that showing them the system in concept form...
