According to a report from Nikkei Net, Nintendo will introduce a new iteration of this Nintendo DS later this year, featuring a built-in camera and music playback. The new version of the DS is also reported to have improved wireless functions. Some versions of the report indicate the improved wireless capabilities will allow the new DS to connect to "information terminals," expanding the machine's non-gaming features.

The Japanese version of the report mentions that pictures taken via the DS's internal camera can be used by games, opening up new gameplay options.

Nikkei Net writes that the new version is "expected to be priced below 20,000 yen." The Nintendo DS Lite is currently priced at 16,800 yen in Japan. The new DS will launch first in Japan, with the country seeing an allocation of "several hundred thousand units" before any overseas sales.


Seriously? I mean seriously? Is this even needed? Has the age of gaming died off and left us with tons of weird features to forget about the fact we wanted to play video games?
 
well i have an original DS and i was thinking of maybe trading it for a lite but i guess i better wait XD, it's not necessary but its good to me XD
 
Wow. This sucks. But it can be worse. Anyone up for a game of Mario Kart on the Nintendo DS/GPS? :lol
 
If they make it the same price(and so that the MP3s play while it's shut), I'm fine with it. If the price is even up $10, that's a problem.
 
Oh, and you're missing the part that makes it a bit better.

A removed article on the site Monex.co.jp (screenshot available at the NeoGAF link) said that the new DS will feature the ability to share data with the Wii via the SD slot, as well as larger screens.

Now wait a minute... Why is everyone so negative towards this? For a long time, people were saying the DS needed more features like the PSP. Don't get me wrong, I love my DS as is... but if this gives the DS a competitive edge (like it needs more of an edge)... and it does it well... I am all for it. JUST AS LONG AS THE COST ISN'T INCREASED TOO MUCH.

I hate to say it... but I Am starting to become more accustomed to All-In-One devices.

It was cool to have individual consoles that played games. I hesitated when they started making them more multifunctional. TO THIS DAY, I'd rather have just a gaming unit... but I don't think the DS has anything to lose with a new route like this... and if you want to keep seeing more Nintendo handhelds and their great games, I think this might have to be a path travelled... maybe. Maybe not...

Yeah, Nintendo's still focused on games. They're not making music for you to listen to off it, they're not making a store to buy it from, they're throwing in a feature that lets you listen to music, presumably over in-game tracks. They don't even acknowledge it past press statements and unit building.

and with every new model they make they add stuff instead of taking them out *looks at lack of backwards compatible ps3*

DS Lite's won't suddenly disappear. You can still pick up an original DS on Amazon for less than a DS Lite. This is essentially giving the consumer another SKU to choose from, and I honestly have no problem with it, although it certainly isn't enough to make me buy another DS.

I do not agree... I still use it. I like the new screen on the DS Lite, but I like the overall console shape of the original DS. Fits on my hands better than the lite.

Not sure if anyone else noticed this... but I seem to get a better WiFi signal with my original DS as well... than the DS Lite.

Yeah, that's true. The DS Lite is uncomfortable to hold for long periods of time. I got a NERF cover for mine that helps a lot; it protects the DS from scratches and makes it more comfortable at the same time! :lol
 
Those NERF covers are EVIL! This little girl came in and asked to remove it, so she could play Guitar Hero DS. I spent 15 minutes trying to get that evil thing off! I had to use WIRE CUTTERS! I kid you not!

DS Fat are still great systems, why knock it?
 
Ugh, I think the opposite. Awkward button placement and the stylus placing and the general bulk makes the Fat hard to hold for me.

Yeah, the button placement on the DS Lite is much better, IMO.

If they made it so that they could display DS games on the Wii...like how the gameboy player works er something...then that I'd def want to get. Cuz then my kids could all easily watch me play without crowding me. lol

But if it just interacts and no games are viewable on the tv, then it does not make much difference to me.

I don't think they needed to change the DSlite. It seemed perfect to me, but if they wanna add features and change it...why not? I mean, unless my DSlite won't be able to play some of the games cuz of it needing things the new kind would have as extra features. hmmmm
