I'd almost have to say the original is still the best 
MAN I loved the homing shells on that game :lol
And whats funny.... in some of teh death match stages... you slide in a circle totally avoiding the homing shell for a few minutes :lol and if you were lucky.... you could avoid it all together.

imho it's hard to tell, both games are still equal, but Mario Kart 64 hasn't aged very well over the years...especially when I didnt remember this...when you go into 4 player mode...the BGM is cut out to save up on frame rate and game speed 
Yet Mario Kart DD is still fun as ever...I just wish it would stay as a single person per cart...switching drivers was a pain in 1 player mode...but awesome in 2 player mode....to me, MK DD was like the Bomberman series, you just can't play it alone.
