Kotor MMO looks probable

Lucasarts and Bioware are collaborating on a new project. It doesn't take a genius to put two and two together and figure out that the new project they're talking about is probably a Kotor MMO.

A Kotor game, without plot, or characters. Yahoo. ::)

Re: Kotor MMO looks probably

I can't help but say that this looks interesting. I wonder if they would actually try to make this. :)

They never said it couldnt be KOTOR 3
Ah, true. Bioware does have an unamed next gen project in the works, but given all the secrey and anticipation surrounding the MMO project, it seems more logical that the project Bioware and Lucasarts are working on is the unamed MMO.

Re: Kotor MMO looks probably

KOTOR 3 would be awesome. On KOTOR1, I'm becoming a Sith. Just a update.

Re: Kotor MMO looks probably

Don't you mean "Kotor MMO looks probable"? :lol

But grammar issues aside, I think it'd be pretty cool if they pulled this off...as long as there's not an astounding monthly fee.

Star Wars Galaxies is getting up there in age... they've already completely revamped it once (and angered the players who had ACTUALLY WORKED TO MAKE JEDI before they offered it as a starting option!) but people still do play it.

And really guys ... why does everyone assume that MMOs can't have plot??

Well, how much plot can they really have? It seems to me that the very nature of the MMO, being an open-world, with very few set NPC's, prevents a plot from playing any kind of major part in the game.

Actually there are a LOT of NPCs... have you ever played an MMO seriously? Almost every NPC has at least one quest, is a character in, or relates back to another NPCs quest. In FFXI each nation has it's own plot that you can advance through via missions (10 ranks at 3-4 missions each, that's well over 30 cutscenes with NPCs, times 3 nations, plus Jeuno which has ITS own plot) and each expansion has a storyline that you can advance though as well. You can CHOSE NOT TO go through a lot of the story. I don't know why anyone WOULD but ... eh. To say there is no plot is absolutely an incorrect statement.

Yeah but, there aren't any like party members, or main villains there to provide and advance a compelling plotline.

I've never played FFXI, but from what you said, it does have a plotline. However, it seems more like an exception to what I said. In my experiences, most MMO's don't really have a major plotline. Maybe the new one from Bioware will have a plotline, but I'm not expecting it to be in there.

Well to tell you the truth, if they didn't have much of a plotline, I wouldn't be too upset. RPG's are for good plotlines, MMO's are for good communication with friends and other people.

Yeah, I agree with that. The thing is, a lot of what I loved about Kotor came out of the plot, and I don't want to see them make the MMO in the place of Kotor 3. The ned of Kotor 2 was the perfect setup for a sequel, and its just stupid to make the sequel something that doesn't advance the plot.

So far I've had escort quests, but no, no NPC party members. You can get one through a quest though, who will adventure with you when you call them.... They are not major players in the stories, just NPC "friends" who help your character out with battles. The main villians do play their parts in the stories, but I haven't gian a high enough level to be able to say in detail anything about them. Right now my rank is only high enough for "the Shadow Lord is coming" and "a darkness is falling over the land that must be stopped."

IMO they story elements of FFXI are what keep most people playing it. I'm fairly sure that's why Mai is losing interest in the game, we haven't gotten started with the main story because we're not strong enough yet to get it rolling. Once we get into it she might get more into it, but at the same time it's like reading a book with a slow start - how many people will keep reading til it starts getting good? In the LJ community I belong to that deals with FFXI, people post all excited when they finish story arcs and put up spoiler warnings to the storyline-related posts. I know some friends who played and quit to play WoW, who both quit WoW to come back to FFXI. On the other hand I know a guy who played with us who quit for WoW, but he just seemed to think the slow pace starting out was too frustrating. In the modern era of video games I feel it is a mistake to make ANY game without a plot ... what would keep us coming back without stories and goals?

Now is time for cake!
