In the meantime they also managed to not only win the console war but get a stranglehold on it that will probably last for at least one or two generations. Pricing the PS2 lower than its cost to make may have just ensured that they'll turn a profit for the next decade in the videogame industry.

I know the system never turned a profit, but all the games sold on it more than made up for it. It was a smart strategy. To get a billion systems into homes of consumers who are probably going to buy memory cards, controllers, games, and whatnot. It's also a lot cheaper to retain customers than it is to get new ones. Only time will tell, but I think the PS2 was a combination of strategy and common sense, and it will pay off even when the PS3 comes around.

now they are saying it is going to cost 900 dollars for production costs which they would sell it a little lower and take a hit on the system but still 600-700 bucks for a console is insane
