Hype- Helpful, or Harmful?

ThravRande

Darth Revan is watching you.
I know that hype has the potential to both help and harm a game, but which happens more often?
Just from listening to some of the old World 9-3 podcasts, I can see how games that were big had too much hype, and therefore weren't received as the great games that they really were.
So I wonder- Would the vast majority of games be better off with no hype at all? And what are some good games that you can think of that got too much hype, and therefore they weren't as enjoyable as they could have been?

I usually hype myself up for games but i research a lot so i know exactly what to expect, usually i am not letdown by what i buy.

I was actually talking about how companies hype up there games.
Do you think it would be better if they just kept everything kinda hush-hush until near it's release?

oh I apologize....

well I think they should hype their games because that's how a company gets people interested into buying their games...

but then again most of the time i buy games that are not very hyped up (JRPGS) and Nintendo games (which usually meet my expectations regardless if it was hyped or not)

I would say no, the hype really does wonders. However, I wish there was a way to predict if a game is going to flop. Sure we have reviews, but everyone has a different opinion on a particular game. Just one definite answer would be grand, but you can't ask for Rome if you're only given pieces of it before it's launch.

Well, those types of games sell very well as well, right? So are there better ways to sell a game, other than just by hype?

Has too much hype ever caused you to not enjoy a game, or enjoy it any less?

Oh yeah, all the time. One particular game of this year had to be White Knight Chronicles for PS3, I was very impressed with the features and such, and to find out the hidden truth of the gameplay was worse than DOA Extreme Volleyball. In other words, you want the cool stuff in the game, then you have to play the other games you don't enjoy.

I think it can work both ways. If the game is good AND deserves the hype, then it is helpful.

However, too much hype on a mediocre game can REALLY spoil it... for example Red Steel. It was still a decent game, but the massive amount of hype sort-of ticked people off once saw the game didn't live up to the hype (IMO).

I'm not sure if this applies, but where I live, when Halo 3 came out it was huge.EB Games even opened in the mall at a special time in order to get the game.A lot of people were really pumped up about this title, but I've heard several people say that were let down because the game was so short. Is this what you mean by hype? :)

Sounds like it.
I mean, when TF2 came out, it was supposed to be the greatest star wars game ever. I got really excited about it.
I've played the DS, PS3, and Wii versions, and none of them even come close to KotOR. Not that they were bad games, I was just expecting more, and it disappointed me a bit.
