Generation Nex from Messiah

Tommy V

I'm Not So Bad, Once You Get To Know Me.
I just picked up a dual front/top loading nes system from Messiah called the Generation Nex. This thing is awesome. First off it's designed to look like a slim version of the original nes....

This thing loads US Nes games in front and famicom games on top. The controller is very comfortable and easy to use....

...it even has turbo and slow buttons. Still not impressed? You can purchase wireless controllers seperately...

One of the coolest features is the instruction manual being in the shape of an nes game cartridge. Plus it uses AV cables for a much better picture. Compatible with nearly every NES/Famicom game available this is an excellent pick up for those who still appreciate the days when graphics weren't the heart and sould of games. It comes with the console and everything pictured here...

The controller ports are also exactly the same as the original nes so you can use all you accessories and peripherals on this system. There are many different NES top loading systems by a variety of companies but I'm glad that I passed them all up and got this little beauty.

So it's the manual that looks like a game?

I am working on becoming a supplier for that system as we speak btw :)

Got a few other things in the works too. :)

How do the controllers play and all?

Well I just got it, but was playing for a couple of hours last night. The controllers cool. Not only do you have the A and B buttons on the face of the controller but the shoulder buttons are also A and B buttons. So you can use any combination that feels most comfortable.

I also like the fact that that little M logo on the face of the controller lights up. :D

As far as the console goes the games fit nice and snug, a little tight, you gotta give 'em a good tug to get 'em out, but still great. It's very compact, so it'll fit almost anywhere and not take up a lotta room. :D

My fellow Americans, Microsoft is now to be further known as "The Evil Empire". If you cna find the personm who said that qouted phrase and what people referred it to, BV will bring you up a rank on this board.

I have no idea what you're talking about but it sounds like something for a different topic.

Only problem I have with it...it cannot play CastleVania 3: Dracula's Curse easily... :( It has a rough start, then the music is kind of cut off for some odd reason.

May I ask how much this thing was?? It looks sweet, and I like how it can play Famicom games.

My shoebox NES plays awesome now that I replaced the 72 pin connector. But I am sure that it will not always play awesome...

My sytem broke...how much for that thing? I gotta pick one up soon.

Okay, I finally got one. Yet my only beef is the price of it. So thank god, GameCrazy/GameStop sells these little buggers, so I traded in some controllers I get from the flea market to bring down the price to $34 lol (Because $30 is what I honestly felt should been the price tag)

I'm gonna do a mini-review on this, so here we go:

the power supply is small and easy to plug in, unlike the original brick

the controller it comes with, is very nice. Except the Select/Start are near the A/B button. I thought it would be a problem, but it feels like using a normal NES controller after a while. The Wireless controller is built entirely different. It's D-pad feels bizarre and takes a while to get used to. Personally, I perfer the wired controller, since it feels closer to the real thing.

Video quality. I would say rocks, but some games suffer from color issues, like it'll look a tad darker, but not so much to effect the game. Like Super Mario/Duck Hunt cart, Super Mario's background looks darker instead of a bright blue background. Really minor imho.

However, the biggest difference will hit when your ears find out that, the system itself has a different sound chip inside of it. This effects many sound effects and BGM in alot of games. Super Mario Bros. 1 and 3 for example, sounds like an entirely different game now. This is minor, but maybe a fans worst nightmare if you plan on humming the SMB theme while playing...

I played Bubble Bobble, Mario 3, TMNT 2: The Arcade, and TMNT 3: The Manhattan Project on this system so far and haven't had a single problem.
However, my copy of Super Mario/Duck Hunt started screwing up after I tried to clean it and the Messiah could not read it at all. Later on, I found out it was just my cart that was screwed up and NOT the systems fault. When this happens, NEX recommends you should find another copy of the same game. Easy if it's a common game, but a pain if it's harder to find of course.

Overall, after you set aside all the problems, which isn't that bad by far, the performance delivers what you'd expect. I'm very pleased with this system

if you want an NES that doesnt need much cleaning...easy storage...and all you gotta care about is cleaning the NES carts? the NEX Messiah is your best bet

I thought it was gonna be crappy, but I'm happy with it. As time goes by this week and next, I'm gonna test out more games with it, including CastleVania 3 to get to the bottom of that problem.

My rating for it, a 7 out of 10.

Not perfect like a REAL top loader by Nintendo, but plays the most popular games without problems, makes this a sure fire winner to impress your family and friends.

yeah... it's still in the works... buit I think I am going to try to carry these in the future.

I've heard pretty good things regarding this system.

SO... how off is the sound? I mean... how does it sound different?

Well, let's take Mario 3 for example to describe the sound effect issues. The SFX for jumping, coins, throwing a fire ball, turtle stomping, power up after grabbing a flower or leaf, is completely different, but strikes similarity when played on an NES. World 2: Desert Land overworld map BGM, the music is altered, you can't hear the main chorus that well, but the bass is fully intact.

Other games, like Bubble Bobble, is perfect. Only 1 problem I've seen (more like "heard"), is when Bub or Bob dies, the sound effect is different.

TMNT games work perfectly, however in TMNT2 the music is altered a bit, but not so badly to ruin the game.

Tempting, but I still have a NES that works. :) And now with the Wii's virtual console, I don't know that I'd really need the Nex.

True, but like you said, if you have a real NES or a Wii...this device is pretty much pointless to have hanging around :)
