Gears of War RTS

It's about an epic war for crying out loud.
So is every RTS on the planet. The specific circumstances of the war hold it back from being a good RTS, however. For one thing, by the time of Gears of War, the COG is totally and completely depleted. Their fighting force is incredibly small, often only being able to field a couple units at once. While this one man against the world aspect was a plus for a shooter, it simply wouldn't work for an RTS. If the two sides were to be realistically portrayed, the Locust would win every battle by a landslide, simply because they can field so many units at once. (this is of course without the super-powerful player controlled character)

Another problem, as mentioned by Fr0dus, is the total and complete lack of class structure on the COG side. There is truly nothing there beyond generic footsoldier. So, while the Locust have Brumaks and Boomers, the COG have a couple guys with machine guns, in heavy armor. I foresee balancing issues there.

A third thing which was also already mentioned is that Gears is a slower tactical FPS. It would be difficult to transfer this over to an RTS (unless they were to do it similar to Full Spectrum Warrior, which I could see working very well), as telling units exactly how to maneuver and take cover isn't easy when you have a large-scale RTS. So basically, if you wanted to make a Gears of War RTS, the style of play and feel of the original would be totally and completely lost, the game would be horribly unbalanced, and they would essentially have to invent a bunch of units for the COG. Not exactly an ideal RTS if you ask me.

If done right, the game could be quite good. Gears 2 already tells us there is a lot more to both the COG forces and the Locust. If they were to make one, my guess would be the COG would focus heavily on vehicle and smaller nubmers of more powerful units, with the Locust focusing mainly on larger numbers of weaker infantry backed up by heavy support units.

Still, the humans have choppers, tanks, APCs, and the derricks. That's not bad comapred to the possibilities for the Locust. Also, about the COG forces being depleted, are prequel setting could solve that issue.

If they DID make one, I wouldn't play it. I'm just not much for RTS, it always feels tedious to me.

You haven't played the actual Gears of War game anyway. :lol

I'm not a big fan of RTS as far as I know, but I would probably at least try it. :)

I think if this were to go RTS, it would be very difficult but at the same time, if done right, could be a big leap forward for the RTS genre. The Locusts come out of the ground, everything about them is underground except when they fight so the overview screen would have to incorporate that. The humans would be above ground but must watch out for the locust holes popping everywhere and seal them up all the way till you hit the main base and drop a nuke or something. It could be done, just very difficult.

I'm going to have to go with fhq on this one. Epic is a shooter company. They have literally no experience with RTS's. Add in the fact that Ensemble, Microsoft's in-house strategy gurus are busy with Halo Wars, and this one doesn't seem very likely. It could happen once the trilogy is done, and Halo Wars is out, but I doubt it.

Bungie is also a shooter company and their making a RTS so why cant EPIC?

Wouldn't this become repetative after time?

Not saying this is more realistic, but after playing Halo Wars, this seems like it could work pretty well.

only problem is in Halo Wars ur to far up, if they do Gears you should be able to zoom in close, so u can see people being chainsawed.

You mean like with Dawn of War where you can rotate the camera to any height level and angle? that feature makes the DoW series so wicked, I reckon!... but i don't think this would work for a console.

I'm starting to think that if someone else got in, they could actually make a GoW RTS... but it'd be tricky... i still think moving along and fighting locust popping up out of the groun every time will get repetitive, but in all regards, so is constantly building units and swarming the enemy while trying to fend off their constant attacks.

At least, after the second GoW, you can see that though the COG are in short supply, there are still plenty to go around, plus any able stranded.
Consider the ending sequence for GoW2? Lots of COG about. Plus, there's stranded all over the place when you progress through. And at the end, you saw how many choppers are in the air? There's easily 10+ people per helicopters!

A drawback I do sense for this game though would be having Hero's who level up. In some rare cases, i reckon it can be alright. WC3 did it with their hero's, and some may say that it was a horrid mistake, but i reckon it gave people something different to do for a change as well as the usual strategies employed with the previous Warcrafts.
GoW RTS styled game WOULD fail with this... so if any developer gets the heads up from EPIC to make it, they better not encompass that flaw.
Objectives, I assume, would be laid out easily enough. "take this, destroy that, seal up this" and even "nuke something while your at it". So apart from potential difficulties, you've got something easy enough set to set upon. And Ensemble have proved that RTS's can work on consoles with simply to use button adaptation. So if they take a page out of their book, then there's something already worked out.
One thing is though... with Ensemble gone, and I doubt Blizzard will do it, who would EPIC turn to to make an RTS? Apart from the groups Ensemble split into, there's little they could tunr to, and I dread the day they attempt to make an RTS themselves when they're so used to making FPS's. (though, i shall eat my words if they do make a decent RTS)
