Hey All,
I happen to be a fan of the prison drama "OZ".
This show aired on HBO somewhere in the early to mid 90's.During the 1 hour show, observations about life and prison are peppered throughout by a host character known as Augustas Hill.Sometimes he comes up with interesting concepts, such as the one I noticed, and I thought I'd share with you guys for your input.
Please keep in mind, this show was from the 90's or so,so I'm certain the numbers have changed,or the law,so take it for what it's worth. He stated..."The Oregon Legislature" passed a law authorizing the state "D.O.C. to charge Inmates for costs associated with their imprisonment. We are talking such luxuries as "Medical Care"."Administrative Expenditures", and"Room&Board",which they estimate, costs $65/Day or $25,000/Year per prisoner.
Given' that Oregon pays those incarcerated, only $10.80 a week for work, you could end up leaving prison in debt and then forced to commit a crime in order to make restitution which of course, could lead you back to prison, where you would have to pay.
I guess you could call that a "Vicious Circle"! (The actor grins at this point.)
I assume by "Forced" he meant that no one would hire an "Ex-Con" to work for them out of distrust, and as stated above,I'm certain a lot has changed since this show aired, but does he have a point,or is he just acting bitter?
Godspeed,
KAZ
