Do You That Games For Today's Consoles Aren't As Long As They Could Be?

I certainly thought that "RE 4" could have been longer.I've heard others say that "GOW III" was a tad too short.I've also heard that "Halo III" was kind of a let down because of it's length.I guess I just don't understand why some titles are far longer than others that are programmed on to the same style disc.

"Grandia III"(PS2) was too short for my liking. It's not like they didn't have the space. It wasn't nearly as long as "FF XII"(PS2).What am I missing?

Halo 3 is mainly a multiplayer game, I don't think that many people care how long the story part of the ga,e is.
Some games are longer than others because depending on how much graphical detail is in the disc, and how much there is to gameplay, might not leave as much room on the disc as some other titles. So the higher quality/better/more gameplay options a game has, the less room there is on a disc for the developers to add to the story.

It depends a lot on the type of game. RPG's tend to be longer because of their mechanics (leveling, multiple quests, etc). Action games tend to be shorter because a typical action gamer would not like to repeatedly fight through the same enemies repeatedly in the same environment for hours on end, they want quicker progression and more things happening.

Are the games of the past really that much longer, though? Or do we just remember them that way?

I remember games did seem like they were longer, but I also remember that I wasn't always as good at them as I am now. A game now that I could beat in a matter of hours might have taken days when I was a kid.

I have to say no, in that games were only more difficult in terms that it was really easy to screw the player over. For example, fom start to end with no warping, Super Mario Bros for the NES might not take someone more then a few hours. But there were no continues. Once you lost all of your lives, you were back at 1-1.
