Could be released this fall!

The a UMD-free Playstation Portable 2 is indeed real and could hit as early as this fall, David Perry, chief creative officer at Acclaim, told Kotaku today.

"I spoke to a developer who is working on it right now," he said. "I know this developer is already working on it, so that means they have a prototype. That would sound like a fall release to me."

Perry said he is excited about the news.

"I've been pounding on Sony for a long time to make the Playstation Portable relevant and not to let Apple stroll away with the portable game market," he said. "Look at what Apple is doing now. Why are so many investors investing in Apple game development? Trying to pitch a PSP game to investors right now is brutal."

The idea of a UMD-free Playstation Portable begs the question of how games will be loaded onto the device.

Perry believe it will be done through digital downloads and direct connect to a computer.

The ultimate goal, he says, is for the Playstation Portable to go 100 percent digital. Not only would that allow Sony to have a more direct connection with their customers and get a larger piece of the sales pie, it would essentially kill the used game sales market.

As a stop gap to keep retailers like GameStop interested in selling the Playstation Portable 2, which they make little to no money on, Perry thinks that Sony would at least initially sell games for the device on Memory Sticks, as they currently do with some movies, or with pre-paid cards.

As for backwards compatibility, it stands to reason, Perry says, that all current PSP titles would show up on Playstation's online store.

While Perry insists that the PSP2 is real, and already been developed for, a lot of the details about distribution and release are more speculative on his part.

It does make sense that games will one day go digital only, it seems inevitable. But is now too soon for something like the PSP?

They are trying to kill the used games market, though, which I can't say I'm pleased about. If they decide to go with digital distribution, you'll always be paying full price for the games. At least until they drop in price, anyway. I wonder what you're supposed to do if you hate a game; I doubt they will give you money back in this case. Since it's digital distribution, they would have no way to know if you actually deleted the game.

Hmm, I wonder if others think like you Mai. So many people hate GameStop and used game stores cause they "rip you off" and such..but if they get rid of them as a whole, people will still be mad. So it's a lose/lose situation.

I wouldn't say that I hate GameStop or the services it provides. In fact, from a customer standpoint I actually don't have much of an issue. My beef with GameStop is from an employee standpoint. And I'm not employed by them any longer, so it's a moot point now.

But anyway, I don't think it's a good idea to eliminate the used-game market.

I think like Mai I think, she's right. This digital distribution is going to harm the re-sale market.

I'm with the same opinion as Mai. I don't hate GameStop'. It's the business, from a former employee stand point myself, is what I hate the most about them. I never had a bad experience with buying or selling with them.

I like to rip on GameStop, since it's so fun! Yet I never had any beef with them, except for crooked management in the past.

Don't get me wrong guys, I don't want anything to harm the game re-sale stores either. But, I don' think one console out of all of them doing this will bring much harm to GameStop or other places.

I doubt the PSP would trigger ONLY digital game downloads for the PS4 or next Microsoft Console..and certainly not Nintendo. But then again, we have no idea what the PSP 2 is gonna use for media. For all we know, digital game downloads can be just one form.

You never know, is all I'm saying. DSi can do it with VC games, 360 and PSN can already download full games without the need of a disc. It's getting more obvious.

Yeah, but I jus think the chance of that being the majority of games for consoles, is pretty slim to none. That's just me though.

Never suggested that, just saying it triggers events.

PC's have been doing it for a good while now and consoles are turning into PC's more than ever now.

Slightly...but I wouldn't stretch it that far. I get where you're coming from though.

I know...that's why I said slightly. :lol

I was agreeing with you. :)

Yup, which is why I say, slightly with you in agreement. Which is why I tried to remember if the PS3 does hook up to a printer.

PSP 2 is being code-named "PSP-4000" now.

Looks like the PSP 4000 is basically everything we've heard so far. The UMD-Less system could be ready this fall.
