Best Games of this Generation

Post up your favorite games that have came out this generation and why you love them!

Call of Duty 2- while not exactly a huge improvement over last generation in graphics, it was a very fun game with great multiplayer that really got me hooked on the 360.
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter- The first MUST HAVE multiplayer shooter for the 360. The graphics were a big improvement over GR2, and it was just tons of fun to play.
Oblivion- What is there to say? An incredible game that is still fun to play, with so much to do (and awesome graphics to boot!)
Splinter Cell Double Agent- Even though it is probably the worst SC game, its still a great game and one of the best stealth titles on the 360.
Gears of War- Wow! This game will always be in my memory. It was the first REALLY hyped game for the 360 and for the most part, it made good on it. This was the first game that really made me think "There is no way the old systems could have done this!" Brutal, bloody, and satisfying gameplay + online co-op + really fun adversarial modes = first epic win of this generation
Rainbow Six Vegas- Easily one of the best multiplayer games this generation. I was sucked into this game so much, even joining a clan and playing competitively. Tight gameplay, good graphics, and a stellar online mode showed that Tom Clancy was still king of tactical shooters and I couldn't be happier.
GRAW2- Very similar to GRAW1, it almost seemed like an expansion. But it made improvements in all the right places and was a blast to play online.
Crackdown- A lot of people said this was a free game attached to the Halo 3 beta. I totally disagree with them, I love this game like no other. It was a great sandbox game, limited only by your imagination. Although, there was too much sand and not enough box at times, if you had a friend to play co-op with this game is endless fun. It set an example that all games should follow as far as co-op games go, and the total absence of load times and ability to go anywhere regardless of where your partner was makes it a technical marvel too.
Mass Effect- While not as good as Bioware's KotOR, this was a very solid action RPG with a great story. Although at times it did seem more of an interactive story than a game, it was very engrossing and detailed and fun to play.
The Darkness- Not an incredible game, but it was fun to play. The godawful multiplayer was a disappointment, but the dark storyline and vicious violence made it a guilty pleasure to play.
Orange Box- Not a game per se, but it is a landmark in terms of marketing and sales strategy for games that hopefully more companies follow. 5 games in one, 3 of them brand new, is such a good deal. Team Fortress 2 is one of my most played multiplayer games of all time, endless fun of well balanced class warfare. Portal is a mindblowing puzzle game that EVERYONE needs to play. Half Life 2 and its episode packs are both excellent FPS adventures with a mysterious and engrossing storyline and gorgeous graphics.
Call of Duty 4- Ditching WW2 and going to modern times was an excellent move. Great story and campaign gameplay, backed up by one of the best multiplayer experiences on a console ever made this game an epic win :D
Rainbow Six Vegas 2- Like GRAW and GRAW2, Vegas and Vegas 2 are very similar, but equally fun. Great game.
Dead Rising- Zombies + mall = win. Although the NPC AI was terrible, this game was SO MUCH FUN. Being able to grab anything you want and plow through hordes of zombies is such a guilty pleasure its ridiculous.
GTAIV- Incredible story (worthy of a movie) with great graphics and gameplay make this one of the best games ever made, period. The multiplayer wasn't perfect, but was a lot of fun and icing on top of the cake as far as I was concerned.
Dead Space- In a surprise move by EA, they released not only a new IP but a good one at that. Dead Space is a very creepy, scary game. Great graphics and atmosphere make this a very good horror game, plus a mysterious story helps draw you into the game.
Fable 2- A great action RPG, with a lot of things to do. Load times are annoying, and co-op was a let down, but the game delivered a great experience.
Fallout 3- A very fun Oblivion-esque game. Not as good as Oblivion because of the level cap and an actual end to the game, but a fun game with terrific gore and graphics.
Endwar- A very unique game, but a good one. The game controls great with voice commands, and the depth of strategy makes it an endlessly replayable game. Theater of War is an awesome concept that needs to be emulated by other game developers.
Gears of War 2- Similar to the first Gears, but better in every way. Horde mode seals the deal, this game ROCKS!
Left 4 Dead- I could write about why this game is so awesome, but the words "4 player co-op in a zombie apocalypse" are all I need to say.
Resident Evil 5- Very different from the old games, like 4 was. But the game is very fun and the gameplay is addictive.

Best arcade games (I won't include games from past generations, so no Doom, Smash TV, etc)
Geometry Wars- Simple, difficult, and fun gameplay make this a model arcade game.
Bomberman LIVE- A very old school game, but tons of fun to play.
Castle Crashers- A hilarious game, with tons of characters and a fun co-op mode. Gotta love it!

Also, fo the Wii
Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles- Addictive rail shooter action that fun to replay to try to beat your best scores and times, a surprise favorite of mine this generation.

I think that's all of my favorite games from this generation, I may have missed one or two though ;)

For the DS Homefront, I will give my best game for innovation to the World Ends With You. It took the rpg idea to a whole new level.

DS
-Obviously i agree with Starrynite, The world ends with you is my favorite RPG of this generation, it blew me away all the things you could do in that game and its story is very unique.
-Fire emblem Shadow dragon: it allowed me to play with marth and is also one of the few franchises that nintendo publishes that still has that hardcore feeling to it
-Phoenix Wright: Trials and tribulations: simply the best "point-and-click" game ever and the best way to end the phoenix wright trilogy, simply amazing
-Castlevania order of ecclesia: one of my first castlevania games to play and the best one i played so far, its difficulty wasn't frustrating but it actually made me create an strategy even though i am playing an action game.
-Final fantasy IV: even though is a remake i still love the new augments and tweaks to the story that made an epic game even more amazing.
-the legend of zelda phantom hourglass: an addictive zelda game with a good story and great use of the DS capabilities. definitely one of the best
-Advance wars days of ruin: it had a new style but the strategy got even more tricky, i loved the new CO power system because it didn't completely turn the tide of the battle but it was good enough to help in many strategical points

Wii
-super smash bros brawl: my favorite fighting game and one of my favorite games there is, i love to compete with my friends and i have fun with the game despise the fact that is more than one year old.
-tales of symphonia dawn of the new world: coming back to the world of tales of symphonia was a very nostalgic experience for me, and the characters were very unique as always. Also the new battle system felt really great and fluid.
-Fire emblem Radiant Dawn: coming back to tellius was also a nostalgic experience and getting to see Ike develop even more with a new cast of characters that form a HUGE army was great, and also one of the most difficult fire emblem games to date so once again, nintendo didn't disappoint me with this one.
-Resident evil umbrella chronicles: reasons stated above and for having a fun co-op experience.
-Metroid prime 3 corruption: great controls, gameplay and story, overall a great game that should be the standards for future wii shooter games.

PSP
-Final Fantasy VII: Crisis core: it made me cry....it is made of win xD. looking at zack's perspective and playing as Zack was once again nostalgic and a new experience.

PS- i will put the game under the system i played the game at.

PS3
-Valkyria chronicles: smash fire emblem, advance wars and a random 3rd person shooter... you get 3 parts of awesome that equal Valkyria chronicles.
-Eternal sonata: very beautiful game with a unique battle system and lovable characters/music
-Bioshock:....do you really need an explanation? ok i'll give you one... ANDREW RYAN there you go xD
-Tomb Raider: underworld : i love tomb raider games and the way this tied up the loose strings from anniversary(TR1) and legends was great.
-pixel Junk eden: i love the simple and stylish gameplay/graphics (and is very cheap too)
-Metal Gear Solid 4: epic....just epic

XBOX360
-Tales of Vesperia: Burst artes + mystic artes + Repede = Made of win
-Street Fighter IV: amazing fighting game with a great battle system, cast of characters and style
-Lost Odyssey: it should have been named final fantasy XI because it is just as awesome as any final fantasy game.

i might be missing something (specially for the DS because i played a bunch of games in it) but i think this is all that comes to mind

I'd say GTA IV.

I started playing that game again the other day (I have an on/off relationship with that game) and it still feels "next-gen." Even other games that I really enjoyed (Fable 2), or put more hours into (Civ Rev), just don't compare to the feel of playing, or existing in, the world of GTA IV. There's just something about it that is intoxicating. Its not the violence, its not the curses, or guns, or "ladies of the night," its just a complete, seamless, experience that demands your attention and respect.

Its just friggin sweet.

If someone ever asked me "what game would I need to play to understand what this generation of games is about?" I would have to answer GTA IV. Nothing else would really answer that question.
