oh and enemies level up with you so don't try to grind your way out of a boss XD
Anyone that knows that much about "FF VIII" is ok in my books! :lol Thank you Chief.Welcome to the forum!Atlove said:FF8 is a game I unconditionally love, as it was the first Jrpg I ever played. Still, I enjoyed Spoony's review, and understand that all the complaints most FF fans have about the game are genuine.
With regard to tips, all I have are the following:
1.) DO NOT GRIND until the third disc of the game. Try to avoid gaining more than one or two levels during the events of the first two discs. Enemies and bosses level up as you do, and since the game doesn't boost your states and equipment fast enough to keep up, the higher your level the harder all the fighting becomes. Bosses don't give you EXP for a reason.
2.) When you get Quetzalcoatl (hereafter referred to as "Q") have him learn the "card" and "card mod" skills as quickly as possible. They save you loads of trouble playing the game.
3.) To gain AP to learn new abilities without leveling up, turn the monsters you randomly encounter into cards by injuring them below half HP and using Q's "Card" skill. Doing so makes the battle worth 0 EXP, but full AP.
4.) Some of the best places to farm AP in the game are along beaches. "Fastilacon" monsters are worth 3 AP a piece, and tend to attack in groups of 3, making for an easy 9 AP per battle.
5.) DO NOT feel you have to draw every magic spell from every enemy you encounter. The biggest complaint I hear is that there's too much drawing, but any spell you can get by drawing can be refined from cards with much less tedium and difficulty. If you DO encounter a rare spell to be drawn (Esuna, Curaga, etc) I recommend only striving to draw 25 of them for each of your characters, and to gain the rest using modification.
6.) To reduce the amount of time you need to spend playing cards, talk to the Queen of Cards (the lady in funny clothing next to the train station in Balamb) ask about how cards are traded and she'll randomly change the trade rule from "One" to any of the others. Some of these, especially "Diff" and "All" will usually let you take all of your opponent's cards when you win, letting you gain cards 5x faster.
7.) If you can manage it, try to keep your party in "critical' status (their HP in yellow) constantly. Not only does this let you trigger limit breaks, but your SeeD rank increases if you continue to do it.
8.) The reason the third disc is the best spot to grind is because it's when you can get the "Jumbo Cactuar" and "Tonberry King" GFs. These GFs have 4 support skill slots, and can learn all of the stat booster skills (HP up! STR up! VIT up! etc...) What these skills do is give you bonus points in the corresponding stat every time you level up. When you get these GFs, equip them to the characters you wish to level, and give them the 4 stat boosters you feel they most need. (I recommend not bothering with HP up, and sticking to STR, VIT, SPR, and MAG) now as you level, your stats will be higher than those of the monsters you encounter.
