Anyone else feel consoles/hardware aren't as reliable as they used to be?

I sure do. So far I've had to fix my PSP, replace a DS Light, fix my PS2, and fix my friend's PSP three times. also now you hear about how the PS3 has the YLOD and the 360 has the RROD.
It makes me kind of hesitant on buying any newer systems considering that they seem pretty fragile, like for instance, the UMD door on my PSP broke when it was hit with a hackeysack, it somehow knocked out the small plastic latch that holds it closed. Atleast that's what my friend tells me, it could've broken earlier that day since I let him borrow it.
Anyway what do you guys think? Would you rather have something that looks like it came out of a toybox yet built to last? Or something sleek and stylish but will get all screwy if dropped?
 
Definitely. Remember the original Gameboy? That thing was a tank, and I loved that about it. Also pretty much anything from the 16 bit era was very reliable. Most of my friends still have their original SNES and Genesis systems along with controllers and they work perfectly. You're lucky to get 3 solid years out of todays consoles, but of course that is largely due to being disc based. It's just the way it is now though and I guess there's not much we can do about it.
 
My Nintendo 64 still runs like a dream and that's like 13 years old, never had a bother with it...
I have also still got my original NES and that works great (you gotta jiggy the cartridge a bit). The controllers still work and the zapper still works as well (yet not on my plasma lol) and that things at least 20 years old. I like old technology as well as new but the old stuff definitely has a longer life span, just bought a cooler for the 360 hope that makes it go the distance that the nintendo's have, well at least half and I will be happy :D

Yeah you probably know more about them than what I do I just got my first one. I just like to make my sh*t last as long as possible :lol . Is that the average lifespan of a 360?
 
I think 5 years or so is the average lifespan of modern consoles. Earlier 360's were notorious for failing, but they might have fixed the problem now.
 
Yeah my Sega consoles are Tonka tough :lol
I have three broken Super Nintendos and my first NES is in terrible condition. Yet all my Sega systems all work as well as when I bought them, although the sound on my Game Gear is a bit weaker.
 
Yeah, but one of the more common problems with the original PS2 had to do with the laser. Had to take my PS2 apart twice already to clean and recalibrate it while my Dreamcast has never given me any problems at all.
 
I think it's because the Dreamcast doesn't play DVDs, though. Dreamcast games are more similar to CDs than DVDs. Same thing with the PSone, even.

The lens burns out faster if you watch DVDs on the PS2.
 
Dreamcast had it's own drive unique, called the GD-ROM Drive "GigaDisc". Only downside, is the Dreamcast format were extremely fragile. Not as durable as a CD or DVD surprisingly. Yet I've seen a few Dreamcast in the years that have gone out., where it stops reading disc or resets without warning sadly.
 
Yeah you guys are right, but I was just speaking from personal experience.

As for pirating, most systems are easy to pirate games for. Like the PSP for example.

Do You That The Quality Of Today's Consoles Are Inferior To The Past Consoles?

I think the consoles made back during the "SNES" days were built with much better quality parts and far more work put into controller quality and toughness.I find today's consoles and controllers are far inferior in quality and toughness than the ones back in the day.In all fairness I'm aware that they contain much more parts,but still the quality I believe to be much less of a concern to the companies that make em these days.

Yup. I agree. But it's not just videogames, that's happening with everything. Just walk through WalMart and compare the items to their ancestors, and you'll see what I mean.
