Hope you don't rely too much on your local Blockbuster for game rentals, because the company have announced plans to close up to 960 stores by the end of next year, Cnet reports.

Right now, there are around 7000 stores worldwide, but many of those aren't too profitable, so they're being shut down. 280-300 stores will be gone by the end of this year, with the rest to come throughout 2010.

Insane indeed.

I still use Blockbuster to rent movies about 6-10 times a year. That's still less than once a month though. That being said, I live about three miles from one Blockbuster, and about four miles from another in the opposite direction. There are still some smaller rental stores of competing companies in the area as well.

They screwed up jacking the online price up. $20 to get movies online and trade for in store free rentals was sweet, but then prices kept going up and perks kept going down. Netflix trimmed the fat, and got cheaper, who cares about going into a block buster now. I'd get free rentals and still spend 10 bucks trying to rent two movies, and god forbid renting a game! The local movie rental places have .99 movies and games on monday and wednesday, backstock movies are always .99 I can get 5 to 10 times my money out of a place like that any day. Use netflix for the off the wall stuff and suppliment with a 99 cent rental (it's only 2 day but still) here and there, i'm still cheaper than using blockbuster and getting more movies / games.

That news is breaking my heart. What ever shall I do?
It's not often in life that you find a place that charges too much to rent a game with no book and scratches that looks as if it was rented previously by Edward Scissorhands, and who can forget the option to rent it until the "Second Coming" if you pay in advance causing others to have to wait.

Peace.

I was being sarcastic.By "Second Coming" I meant that it seems to take a long time if not until the Messiah returns to get your hands on a game that you been wanting to play, because some dudes pay in advance to keep it out until they finish the game.It would be cheaper just to buy it. :lol

Their monthly rental fee price is kind of neat. $30 a month and unlimited game rentals (one at a time though) isn't a bad deal at all, considering the average length of games these days if you can dedicate a good portion of your weekend to gaming, that could be like paying $30 to play through 4 games. Not bad.

Aside from that though, everything's a ripoff. Renting one game for a week is upwards of ten dollars. They just brought back two day rentals, but you're still almost paying $10 for the friggin thing. No point anymore. When I was younger I went to a local video store to rent games. $3 for 1 day, $5 for 2. Perfect. They upped the prices a little bit eventually, $5 for 1 day and $7 for 2, and when that happened I definitely rented less often. Point is, Blockbuster is way to expensive and the majority of their renting schemes suck. Keep it simple and keep it cheap. Its not hard, but they messed it up, and now they're feeling the effects of that.

I saw this coming... but it somewhat sucks.

It sucks to see the way of the rental store go south. I've known a couple people that owned rental stores around here... and smaller chains. They've all went out of business.

Hoonestly, the next stores to go will be local video game retailers... the ones that actually carry a cool selection. I saw this trend start when many online merchants started going out of business. I do not know many survivors... including my store. I could be wrong... but I think few and far between will survive.

It could be the evolution of a business market... but some business changes are not good. I personally do not like the digital distribution method. Ok... I like it to an extent... but I really like to have the game / case / box. I think once bandwidth improves, digital distribution will take off. Crap... In the time it took for UT3 black to download... I could've ran to best buy and back... and possibly installed. That is on a fast connection @ 1.3-1.8 Megs per second. but I digress...
